Technology unofficial challenge

Word limit: 1.5k words
Date: until Monday 5th September (edit: extended to 1st October)   1) Write about an engineering technology (either sciency or magical) that is used in everyday life. Explain how it works in as much details as you are comfortable with doing in your setting, what needs it fulfill and how good it is at that, and what people think about it/how it impacts their life.   For clarification, your technology/engineering doesn't have to be very complicated. For example, a crafting technique for silex or a spindle would count. For me, engineering means what specific process/tool have people developped to deal with an everyday task. Just do something that suits your world and is helpful for your worldbuilding!   2) I also want you to be creative in your presentation and highlight that engineering by showing off how it fits in the world/how people use it/what they think of it/how it impacts their life. To do that, you can: use narration showing characters using it, quotes showing what people think of it, advertisements telling everyone how amazing it is, diaries or letter excerpts, newspaper articles etc. No limits on what you can do, just be creative and have fun!
