The Circus Lives on

Who needs Barnum & Bailey or Ringling Brothers when we have a front row seat to US Politics?

Every day, a new sensational headline about the antics of the US President further my belief that the loss of the circus, and the loss of the old "Weekly World News" tabloid have been replaced by the US President in the form of Donald Trump.

It's not really all that surprising when you consider that in his younger years, Trump was the butt of jokes everywhere. Trump was a meme before memes really existed as we know them today (from social media).

I don't know about you, but I haven't met a person in real life who will admit to having voted for the man.

I can't blame his voters for not admitting to voting for a man of color after they've worked so hard to make people understand that white men are the new underprivileged demographic group in the U.S.

Trump is a master of contradiction. In fact, I'm thinking of submitting a new term to the OED, "contradictarian."

As president, he has initiated a plethora of cuts to funding government programs like the Veteran's Administration, Medicare, NOAA, the EPA, FDA, Social Security, and just about any program you can think of that was put in place to help keep US citizens safe.

Ostensibly, he has taken such measures to save spending by the US Government. These are programs the government has funded beginning with the Depression, programs that actually helps US citizens. He cut funding to the Social Security Administration, yet, he threw himself the biggest birthday bash ever when he turned 79, using the military like he was the ringmaster, spending millions, maybe even billions to give himself the biggest birthday party in history. That is what you call a contradiction. He is saving money by cutting programs that help US voters, ordinary citizens, then turns right around and spends all that saved money on his own birthday bash. When nobody came to his birthday party, he started throwing tantrums.

The first time he was president, he vowed to make the US great again, you know, like it was back in the 1920s. He vowed to bring coal mining jobs back to Appalachia but nobody uses coal any more.

This time, he is concerned that America doesn't make anything anymore. His idea to fix the problem was to place enormous tariffs on goods coming into the U.S. from other countries. Trump believes we should be making our own stuff again and that by making U.S. citizens pay extra to make up for the taxes on things coming from other countries, the U.S. will start manufacturing goods in the U.S. again.

Someone should probably tell him that the U.S. is a capitalist country. All those goods that are made in China, Mexico, and elsewhere, used to be made in the U.S. until the CEOs of corporations that manufactured goods like cars, shoes, electronics, and just about everything Americans consume, discovered that if they moved their manufacturing to other countries that aren't the United States, they would only need to pay workers pennies an hour to make their goods.

Not making goods in the U.S. was way more profitable for those corporations. As for the American workers who were used to earning a living wage.....I can't tell you exactly what happened to them but a good hint is to take a look at Detroit, Michigan.
I find myself asking why our president doesn't know the simplest things. But then I remember that he was a meme before social media even existed.

As attendees of the circus that provides continual "entertainment," we have forgotten that the man elected to be President of the U.S. is not only supposed to be working for us, the citizens of the U.S., he's also supposed to uphold the law. Yet again and again, we watch the incredible freak show-like antics of our president and do nothing about it. I'm not sure why.

Trump, as the president of the United States, is not only supposed to uphold the law of the U.S. Constitution, he is also subject to those same laws. It seems like the entertainment he provides is so shocking and unbelievable, (kind of like a two headed cow or the bearded lady) that we let him get away with breaking the law on a regular basis. Trump really is child like. He is a sulky child who threw the best birthday party ever but nobody came. So he will punish people by deporting the kids who didn't come to his birthday bash by deporting them to El Salvador even though they are naturalized citizens of the United States.

Frankly, I would rather read the old Weekly World News reports of strange aliens mating with Bigfoot in Arizona than watch the new circus that is the U.S. Government headed by a criminal showman like Donald Trump.

P.T. Barnum may have been the penultimate ringmaster and showman for his traveling circus well over a century ago but that role has been taken up by US President Donald Trump, an unwitting bystander of the new circus.
