There is no known treatment nor viable counter-spell.   All medical measures focus on pain reductions and artificial extension of life.

This magically induced illness may take anywhere from a few days to a few years to run its course, the larger capacity of magic that an individual possesses the longer, and consequently more painful, the illness takes to consume the afflicted.

There is no documented research on any known counter-spell, and as such the only possible prevention method is the purging of all existing knowledge on the subject.   Knowledge, on any form or level, is unacceptable and is punishable by Extermination.
