Ground Force Engagements | Tactical View
Ground engagements are resolved using the Grimdark Future battle game ruleset, developed by OnePageRules. This system offers a streamlined, miniatures-agnostic experience designed for fast-paced, tactical battles with minimal overhead. It is compatible with any miniatures or proxies the players wish to use, making it ideal for narrative flexibility and on-the-fly adaptation.
Grimdark Future operates on alternating activations, using familiar dice mechanics (D6-based rolls for attacks, defense, and special actions) and clearly defined unit profiles. Weapon ranges, movement values, and special rules are designed to keep gameplay swift and intuitive while still offering tactical depth.
While Grimdark Future is a self-contained wargame, in this campaign it is used in tandem with our strategic and narrative systems. Ground battles represent high-stakes planetary conflicts, boarding actions, or special operations that cannot be abstracted with simple rolls. When such an encounter arises, players shift into the Grimdark system to resolve the engagement on the table.
The outcome of each ground combat is interpreted and incorporated into the story and wider campaign state by the GM. Resource rewards, casualties, and mission success are determined by the results of the battle, and their narrative consequences are reflected in subsequent Strategic or Tactical View phases.
Ground Forces Unit Sheets
Just like spacecraft, Ground Forces units have their own Unit Sheets. These sheets follow the same structure as those used for ships: including stats, skills, health, and upgrade slots. While the exact mechanics may be resolved differently depending on the scale of play, these Unit Sheets provide a consistent baseline for handling operations outside of full Focused Action scenarios.
Ground Forces Unit Sheets are primarily used during:
- Strategic View Operations (e.g. planetary occupation, raids, covert actions)
- Tactical View Scenarios where full tabletop resolution is not used
- Narrative Resolutions that require consistency in stats and capabilities
Unit Sheets help preserve parity and balance across different gameplay modes, ensuring that ground units have the same level of customization and mechanical depth as starships.
