Illyria

Illyria is an expansive and diverse world. TODO: something like "from the falls of ____ to the peaks of __. It all surrounds the dawn scar ..."

A Flat World

Illyria is a flat world, orbited by a sun and two moons. The majority of its edges have been mapped and are among the most breathtaking sights in all the planes. The oceans plunge endlessly into the void in all directions, broken only by the occasional island jutting out and splitting the currents. Attempting to peer into the heavens beyond the edge is stopped short by the thick wall of fog that clouds the view. There is only one place in the entire world that the fogs do not obscure, a remote island spanning the edge called Heaven's Gate. However, the fog is a truly beautiful sight during dusk. As the sun dips towards the horizon, the fog begins to glow a brilliant, fiery orange and sheds light on the edge of ocean far beyond the point that the sun passes the water level. The radiance only dies out once the sun rotates beyond the underside of the world, fading between reds and pinks and purples before it does so.

The Edges

For a long time, the endless flow of the ocean into the void was a mystery. However, during the mapping of the edges, it was discovered that there are two main reasons for this seemingly impossible situation. First, the oceans become very shallow at the edges, giving rise to many islands and sandbars. As such, very little of the ocean is actually pouring over as the crust of Illyria acts as a bowl that is overflowing slowly. As for the returning of the lost water, when the sun goes beneath the world, it boils the small layer of falling water that has reached close enough to it in its slow, cosmic journey downwards, instantly turning it into vapor. The intense heat as well as the gravity of the moons causes the vapor to rise back into the air forming the walls of fog. This fog then feeds an enormous, everlasting storm that exists as a ring over the oceans.

Eternal Storm

Massive, sky-spanning, thunderous clouds stretch across the sky from where the fog is at the edge of the world to an eternally raging storm further inwards. Spanning a ring around the mainlands through the oceans, the storm is continually fed by the vapor rising from over the edges and is a frequent claimer of lives. Sailing through the storm takes multiple days and is a nearly impossible feat that none but the best captains have ever even attempted. The ring of storm is frequently broken in some areas and thicker in others. Smallers storms can always be found spinning off of the main body and progressing toward the edges or further in towards land. If opportunely placed, a vessel may hope to shorten or even completely skip the journey through the storm by strategically sailing through a gap which has appeared for a short time. The storm has many names but most commonly it is referred to as the Ring of Water, an ironic name given its location through the ocean.
