Shimmering Lake
Surrounded by the least hospitable mountain ranges in the world, the isolated Shimmering Lake exists at the center of the continent of Za'tora (A conjunction of the words Zato, or origin, and Zara, or Mountain.) Before the axis of the planet shifted, this was likely the place of origin for humanity. Hence the naming in the Hizpe'n language. The mountains and the lake within likely used to be a lot more temperate than they were, more like a tropical range rather than the stark desert surrounding a huge freshwater lake.
Geography
Fog rolls across the lake in mornings, covering it with mists, giving it the name Shimmering Lake. Due to the lake being the only source of freshwater for miles around, many of the major cities in the area are located at various regions around the lake.
There are four major rivers, which generally follow north/south lines, flowing into the area during the spring and early summer. These often flood causing rather erratic flooding the area.
Fauna & Flora
Tuberoot Vines are runner vines that grow above ground using energy stored during the day and grow towards the lake during the night. Once they reach the lake, they place down thick roots into the ground and will suck water into the system of vines. They produce a rather tasty fruit during the fall months. It is bright red and is quite sweet. This plant generally reproduces by animals ingesting the fruits and excreting them elsewhere as excrement. During algae blooms in the lake, these are sucked on since they naturally filter water.
The staple food in the area is a small grain that grows extremely quickly. This is due to the fact that when it rains in the area, the water that falls on the valley side of the mountains follows down into the lake. The seeds lie dormant in the soil until the river floods and they spring up using the nutrients and water deposited into the soil. The groundwater from the river or the rains that accompany the spring season will keep its thirst quenched until it goes to seed in early summer.
Natural Resources
Crops grown around the lake generally take very little water and are irrigated using water directly piped from the lake. In the ancient times, ditches were dug to get water from the lake into the fields.
