Crystallization Plague of Colony 3
Following the midhalf of the 4700s, Colony 3 was truly beginning to get off its feet. Its lush and near perfect place in the habitable zone around its star made it a premiere place for agriculture, and it quickly began approaching Tera itself in agricultural output. Unlike many of the other colonies, Colony 3 had a stable atmosphere and biosphere prior to arrival, and many of these plants and animals were domesticated upon the arrival of humanity.
This all changed in 4766. The first things people noticed were some reptiles who were completely frozen into a stone-like crystal. many of the colonists were perplexed by this, and even the zoologists were extremely confused. Little did they know what was to come. It began in Paradisus, one of the smaller farming colonies closer to the north. The people began to develop a horrible cough, which scientists later categorized as stage 1. Stage 2 the lungs begin to fail, as the cells begin to crystallize. Stage 3, it spreads elsewhere in the body, continuing until they are more statue than human.
Transmission & Vectors
Airborn, can also be administered via injection. This will have noticibly different progression as it will begin with the muscles instead of the lungs.
Causes
The scientists studying the virus during its run determined that it appears to be a type of virus, whose infected cells crystallize after bursting. They noted that this is a rather strange behavior for a virus, and could not find a reason for the crystallization, further research required.
Symptoms
A horrible cough, a dry feeling in one's throat and mouth, strange solids in one's mouth ie. early crystallization. There is sometimes a fever, or swelling around the throat and lungs.
Treatment
Several treatments were attempted, from surgery to separate the infected parts, or other common treatments for viral infections. None proved very effective. During the later years of the quarantine, a vaccine was developed that had a 50% or so success rate.
Prognosis
Becoming a statue.
Hosts & Carriers
Nearly all. Most oceanic creatures appear to be safe.
Prevention
Vaccine with a low success rate. (Dead vaccine to be specific)
Cultural Reception
People from colony 3 are tattooed early in life with a simple circle with a cross through it on their upper arm. They are generally ostracized or otherwise avoided "just in case" people say.
