The Calamity

1400 Years ago the planes collided, spilling forth hell's armies and destroying or corrupting most of the world. While most of the world lay in ruin, a few pockets of land and chosen settlements were protected by The Divines who intervened on behalf of their followers and devotees. As the present darkness bore down upon the last remaining light in the world, the wards held the shadows at the gates, and life was preserved.
While none have absolute knowledge regarding the origin of The Calamity, a few scholars and knowledge seekers claim their studies have led them far to the east before disappearing and being lost to time. Few who have deeply pursued this knowledge ever return from whatever lands their journeys lead them to.

Ianora

After the Calamity, those who inhabited the peninsula were trapped in by the same magics that kept the evils beyond the gate out. The explorers and researchers from Old Avenlorea were led by Vicerion Garahel and a group of devout followers of Silvanus. They established the Ianora that we know presently along the shores of Oaken Leaf Lake in current-day Market Shore.
For centuries those who passed the protection of the wards were considered lost, however, 400 years ago (circa 1000 AC), the first group of explorers to successfully return after braving the corruption let us know there was a chance to take back what was lost. Many spilled forth from the protected lands of Ianora. Seeking knowledge, power, glory, or new beginnings in a ruined world. The last 400 years have been hard spent expanding and retaking our lands, building fortifications to protect our lands from the mainland and the horrors beyond The Gate

The Reclamation (1400 AC-Present Day)

In recent years, the wards and protections placed around Ianora have begun to fade, allowing people to freely explore the outside world in hopes of finding new footing in a world altogether unfamiliar. Not an altogether bad prospect, as even with wards there are dangers within the boundaries of Ianora, and safety can never be truly guaranteed.
Many new civilizations have been discovered in the aftermath of The Calamity. Most established settlements seem largely populated worshipers of their deity that protected them.
