The Hills of Goldrift

Deep in the plains, north of the Coral Forest, lies a swath of land set with low rolling hills. The land is flush with grains, which turn the autumn land into a sea of golden grasses. A peaceful aura pervades the region, left to grazers and nomadic centaur tribes to drink in the quiet air. The peace lasts until the coming of a full moon, which sets the hills ablaze with ghosts, wakened by the light and driven to wander until sunrise. Each hill is a grave site, inhabited by the spirits of fallen warriors.

History

Goldrift was not always a peaceful place, and the area was not called Goldrift for most of its known history. It was once flat, and prime agricultural land for nomads and ancient cities. Continuous wars ravaged the land, wars for control over the rich soil and its bountiful crops. Several plains peoples practice the ritual of creating burial mounds for their dead, including the centaurs who eventually claimed victory over the region. The abundant dead and their burials slowly transformed the area, the remarkably flat plains becoming a sea of hills. When the centaurs drove out their remaining enemies, they renamed the region to Goldrift, as the hills resembled the great snowdrifts that form on the plains. The hills now provide some shelter to passing wanderers, as long as they move on before the dead wake.

Ecology

Bison, deer, mammoths, and horses thrive here, grazing on the abundant grain. Large predators like bulettes follow the herds, but often avoid the area to avoid the grasping dead, which are able to target a creature waiting in ambush more easily than an herbivore on the move. Goldrift also produces many wandering sods, powered by coalesced spectral energy.
