Hierophant Inquilla

Hierophant Inquilla is perhaps one of two people who can be directly blamed for the state of the world. In life, she was part of a fringe cult that believed in the existence of Brome, and in her quest to prove its power to the world, she destroyed the lunar cycle and everything bound to it.   Born as an eladrin of the Coral Forest, Inquilla felt the pull of the moons more strongly than her peers. From an early age, she made claims of being able to hear the voices of the moons, along with the muffled call of "their trapped brother", as she would refer to the moon Brome. At the time, Brome's existence was considered pure myth, as the moons still had a stable cycle. Inquilla's insistence that she could hear the five moons, along with the frequent bouts of screaming delirium, quickly drove people away from her. As a teenager, she finally disappeared into the Coral Forest alone. Her tribe did not look for her.   Inquilla found an ancient pyramid deep in the forest, filled with imagery of the various combinations of moon phases. In water stains and mold, she saw the presence of that dark fifth moon, and began to pray. In time, she attracted a following of eladrin, some who were drawn to Inquilla's zeal, and some who felt the moons' calling like she did. As the cult built up around her, it began to draw outside attention. Soon, Inquilla and her lunar cult were embroiled in a war, fought on the physical and spiritual level. Inquilla took on the title of hierophant, and as her sanity spiraled, she began to devise a ritual to release Brome from Ethereum.

Confluence

As this war was building, scholars of the age had been in search of the gods. Many arcane devices were invented to test theories on contacting divine beings, and as failures continued to mount, scholars became more desperate and less careful in their experimentation. When the mytholabe was stolen, Hierophant Inquilla was able to begin her ritual.

The Ritual

Arranging her followers into a spell circle that matched a patch of starless sky, Hierophant Inquilla set the mytholabe to spinning, using the arcane device to pull at the space between lunar beams and to hook into Brome. As the ritual progressed, she pulled Brome out of Ethereum. When the moon breached the veil between planes, its purple and black light burned away the membrane holding back necromantic energies, and a tsunami of spirit and death magic washed over the world, and pulled the other four moons into the ethereal plane. The powerful surge of magic scorched Inquilla and her cult, instantly killing all who were present. With the amount of necrotic magic in the surge, the cult was simultaneously revived, trapping them in a state of undeath forever. The ritual also blasted magic into the mytholabe, causing the device to come alive and mutate, transforming into the creature now known as Spindlewick. Brome's gravity pulled on the other moons, which now also pulled back on Brome, destabilizing the orbit of all five moons. To this day, the lunar cycle is unpredictable because of Hierophant Inquilla's ritual.   Inquilla and her cult now exist as mummies, stuck in a death-like hibernation
