Aarakocra

Before the Fall, the Aarakocra people lived in only one region of the world. Hailing from the archipelago known as The Belt, they were adapted to the tropical climes of the islands. Aarakocra are bird-like humanoids with sharp, curved beaks, and striking plumage in every known color. From their evolution until the Fall, through all of Aarakocra history, the whole populace was part of a single concentrated culture across The Belt. They built an airy city across the sprawling canopy of their rainforest, in some places connecting nearby islands with thick rope bridges. Though they had the freedom to fly far and wide, they stayed within their paradise until the trees betrayed them.   With phytocarnivory ravaging ecosystems across the world, the Aarakocra were forced to flee their ancestral homes. Small groups fled the hungry plants in all directions. Luckily for this small population, their biology allowed them to reach refuges that no other people could: mountaintops above the frost line. Their double-chambered lungs allowed them to settle in the thin air of the highest mountains where others struggled to catch a full breath. Unfortunately, as a tropical species, the fragmented peoples of The Belt had to quickly adapt to an alien lifestyle. Warm clothes and insulation had to be quickly invented, and the the flowing and beautiful garments of old had to be abandoned. Much of their culture was lost in the first few years, and only their verbal traditions could be maintained.   Those who made it to safe perches survived, and the Aarakocra continue still. Scattered to the winds, they forge new traditions, and continue to adapt to their new world.
