Drop 6 - Spoiler

Mission Brief
Commander, we've been tracking a Lyran lance moving through a contested area on the planet's surface. A few hours ago, our scouts reported another lance, of unknown allegiance, on an intercept course. We suspect a fight is brewing, and we'd like you to act as a spoiler. Eliminate the Lyran lance, and the unknown ambushers as well. We don't want to leave any witnesses.     Drop Deck
Pilot Mech
KooKoo Vulcan VL-2T
Barbarian Urbanmech R60
Packrat Firestarter FS9-K
Moon Rabbit Assassin ASN-21
Action Report
The 'Old Lady' gave me the option to turn this mission down. Playing two enemy lances off against each other was a very risky operation. One mistake could mean we'd be forced to withdraw at best and be dead at worst.   I don't like taking unnecessary risks, old mercs are almost all cautious by nature. I'd rather listen to songs about heroes in my old age than be in the songs some other oldster tapped her feet to while nursing a beer.   So, I took the mission and blamed Garm for doing so.   His lance was mauled pretty bad on Biota. Mine was not. You'd think the crew would praise me for making money and bringing back intact mechs.   Nope...   Whispers say that his lance took tougher drops and faced stuff we didn't... the winds carry whispers and even on a ship I can always hear the wind.   So, I put my best pilots in my best mechs and took the drop and just before we hit the atmosphere I said a prayer. I prayed that if I fell the winds would carry my name until I should rise again.   We hit the ground hard - even Sumire, our dropship pilot, was nervous.   Quickly we moved east, hoping to skirt the edge of the battlefield and come at the survivors of this shootout from the north, like a cold wind. It should have worked but we were thinking too small - small as in smaller, lighter mechs. Typically, the enemy would already be scouting to the south and west where Sumire detected an incoming dropship.   But this enemy was big, big and slow, and we ran right into the enemy Trebuchet.   As soon as I saw that Monster I knew I'd fucked up. We were close. Really close. I ordered the lance to withdraw to seek cover behind a low rocky hill we'd passed on our way up. The Assassin, Firestarter and my Vulcan were turned and retreating as soon as I'd given the order. But not the Urby. Not that fucking Urby!   Barbarian tried to pull it around but it moved like a boulder trying to roll uphill.   And then the Mongoose darted into view and fired at the Urby. We had to smash that light before the Trebuchet could catch up. Our three fast mechs all jumped into the Mongoose's rear arc and fired though this exposed our own rear arcs to the Trebuchet.   The Trashcan fired and punished the Mongoose's front armor. The pilot panicked but didn't eject. We could hear the Trebuchet lumbering into the woods but a blessed fold in the ground hid us from its view. We hammered the Mongoose again and the pilot ejected.   Again we tried to flee but the Trebuchet's pilot was looking for payback and we were in his sights.   We could hear an intense fire fight off to the east. More firepower than I'd ever heard before. We needed to abort to get to the pickup point and call Sumire for a hot extract. I was sure the Trebuchet had at least 2 more friends nearby, some where between us and the LZ, we were doomed.   Doomed... but not done.   The Trebuchet cleared the rise and brought it's weapons to bear stripping armor off the Urbanmech. I called for a repeat of our maneuver against the Mongoose and the wind carried my spirit to the other pilots. Three mechs born aloft on their jump jets like leaves in a tempest sailed behind the Trebuchet and emptied all of their weapons into its back, the Urbanmech fired round after round into its front. We swirled around him. He tore at us as we tore at him.   His rear armor gone the pilot's nerve broke and the Trebuchet fled west turning its back from us towards what it thought was safety. The Kuritan Panther's PPC shot tore out the mechs center torso stealing our kill.   This is where the battle truly begins and my memory fails.   A PPC shot from the Panther tore off the Assassin's arm, A Valkyrie jumped into the midst of us and laid into our Urbanmech before we killed it. A Jenner danced at the knife's edge with SRMs and medium lasers before Barbarian destroyed it with her UAC10.   All this time the Kurtian Panther stood atop the tallest ridge raining down PPC shots. The lightning bolts that never missed. He tore off all the Assassin's CT armor and took the Urbanmech's left leg and arm before we could rush up that ridge and silence his weapon. His god of lightning and thunder.   We limped to the LZ. Lucky to be alive. Lucky to keep my name from the tongue of the wind.   Mission results
