Character Classes: Mages (Family, Philosopher Order)
Mages include the Magic-User, Illusionist, and Wu Jen from 1st Ed. These are essentially unchanged aside from the Wu Jen requiring an apprenticeship. Magic-Users do not self-refer as “Magic-Users” but they do not follow the level titles of PHB, either. Rather, each Magic-User chooses a personal title (either a noun like “Derek the Mystic” or adjective like “Daphne the Fantastic”*) and may change it at any time. Illusionists also often follow their names with colourful epithets. One significant change to the Illusionist is that there is now an 8th level of Illusionist magic. However, the only way to see the list of 8th level spells is to become an 18th level Illusionist. This set of super-secret spells is not revealed to players under any other circumstance. Although many classes may use Illusionist magic, only Illusionists have access to 8th level Illusionist spells. There are no 8th level Illusionist scrolls.
*“Wizard” is standardly taken to mean one who has achieved level 12, or 6th level spell use (high-level Sages are sometimes referred to as Wizards if they cast 6th level MU spells “Arch-Mage” specifically refers to an 18th level Magic-User, the level at which one may cast 9th level spells. Anyone referring to themselves as a Wizard who is suspected of being unable to cast 6th level magic is likely to be called out and challenged.
