BUILD YOUR OWN WORLD Like what you see? Become the Master of your own Universe!

Summer Camp Prep

I am a summer baby, but despite that, I prefer autumn. I love the fall colours and the spooky vibes on Halloween. I don't have a lot of free time in the summer either, as I work 6 days a week. Although I found the spring World Anvil Challenge to be fun, I'm excited to learn that there will be another one during the summer. I am not sure how much I will do, but I'm going to do my best on every article I write this summer to help my world grow.

Week 1

Theme: Nourishment

Assignment 1:Think about ways the theme of Nourishment affects your world. Do people generally have what they need? What happens when they don’t?

People do generally have access to what they need. Settlements will usually either grow the crops themselves, or if they can't, they will import them from other settlements. If something goes wrong and places are unable to get food, they will start to hunt and gather from the surrounding area to hold them over temporarily until the imports can come in. If no imports are coming in, they may start branching out and even attacking and stealing from other settlements out of desperation.

My goal for summer camp is to make progress on my current world, the world I am currently working on is a World for my homebrew Dungeons and Dragons campaign. I will use this world as the location for all future homebrew campaigns, not just one; that's why I wish to go into detail on this world and how it works. I feel that everything I build contributes to my goals for this world, although I should narrow my focus to the area where the campaign is starting and build from there.

Assignment 2: Download the pledge document and fill it out with your goal for Summer Camp!

Assignment 3: If you found any outdated articles in your world, update the most important ones now! Do the same with your worldbuilding meta.

I'm new-ish to World Anvil; there is a lot about it that I am unfamiliar with, including how people design their pages, change the fonts, and the meta. I have been watching the tutorials to learn about and slowly going through all of my articles to make sure they are all updated.

Week 2

Theme: Roots

Assignment 1: Look at the cultures and areas you’ll focus on for Summer Camp, and think about how their past has shaped them

Currently, my Homebrew DND world does not have a name, although culture and roots are very important. I discovered a YouTube series by Mariah Pattie Worldbuilding where she created a system of clothing for her race, taking inspiration from places all around the world, and not just using the default fantasy medieval style. That inspires me to try and make the different cultures in this world unique with their clothing styles as well.

One of my players is playing a Tebaxi, and when talking about it, realizing that cat breeds originated from all over the world could make for different variations of Tebaxi. They originally lived a semi-nomadic lifestyle on an island, but due to colonialism, they were forced to leave their island home behind and settle on the mainland. Upon reaching the mainland, the different clouds of Tebaxi spread out, and the areas of the mainland where they settled would change their culture as they adapted to their new home.

My first DND character, who is now an NPC, was a water genasi. When creating her, I was trying to figure out what fabrics she might realistically wear., After watching the YouTube series, I decided that Water Genasi hold the monopoly on sea silk made from special clams. The process done by hand is passed down from ancestors to their children.

Assignment 2: Go to your world’s homepage and imagine you’re a new reader discovering the setting for the first time. What should you change to make the experience more engaging?

My home page is not interesting at all, I know that. I haven't done anything with it since I started with World Anvil. It's kinda the same with all of my articles; they are not designed, as I don't know how to design them. I will have to watch the recommended tutorials so I can learn and make a good home page that people can easily navigate.

Assignment 3: Find your earliest worldbuilding project. What mistakes did you make that you want to avoid? What good ideas from those early days can you integrate into your current project? Remember to take a moment to be proud of how far you've come!

My first world-building venture was kind of inspired by anime; it was a hot mess. The original idea was that there was a continent that was divided between power-hungry leaders who were always fighting and trying to take over others' territory. The main group would end up travelling around and defeating each leader. That was as far as I got plot-wise wise however, when coming up with the characters for this world, I asked friends to make OCs/self-inserts that I would put into it. I also asked them for people they didn't like to make the villain list. It was kind of ridiculous and all over the place. This was back in 2016, if that tells you anything about the villain list.

Week 3

Theme: Metamorphosis

Assignment 3: What transformations and adaptations have the people in your world gone through? What changes are going on right now… and who is trying to stop them?

AS far as I'm aware, none of my players have world anvil, so I can spill the ink on end-of-campaign spoilers without them seeing it. Context my world is a part of a multiverse, which was created by primordial beings as new concepts were created. (examples: light, dark, life, death, etc.) One of the primordial beings however, was the being of consumption and began to devour any universe it came across( I like to call it the Multiverse Muncher). over 7,000 years ago it made its way to the universe that the story takes place in, because of warning sent by the other primordial who where to weak after it kicked their buts in a fight, this world was able to prepare itself for the fight. The entire planet worked together to trap the multiverse muncher in a pocket dimension with little to no power left. The attack caused all kingdoms to fall, and millions of people died. Those who remained had to rebuild civilization back to what it had been. There are ruins scattered around with scroll carvings, et,c of like before the attack, but no one has taken the time to look in the ruins.

The plot of the campaign is a major change that is happening right now, one of the player characters opened the book that sealed the pocket dimension, waking the muncher. He is using what little power he has to be Hawkmoth from Miraculous. Instead of turning people into villains, though, he uses his hold on people to have them create a cult in his honour and to perform a ritual to release him. The ritual requires a lot of things to be complete; once the party finds out about it, they will have to do their best to stop it before it's too late.

Assignment 3: Read a couple of articles from the community, give them a like (and why not a sticker!), and write about what inspired you.

Lovenoma by Soul Sorbet was a great read, and the world-building was inspiring. I also loved the atmosphere the article had; the styling pulled you into the world and made you feel like you were in that world, discovering something ancient. I also love how they had their text laid out; the organization made it easy to follow and helped with the immersion.

SC'25 by Kittymonster was organized and designed well, and it made it fun and immersive. The writing in this article was descriptive and aided me in painting a picture of this world in my head. I also love how they included photos showing artwork from their world-building journey.

Week 4

Theme: Metamorphosis

Assignment 3: Think about current events that will impact the future. Who is working to create a specific kind of future?
