Kossus' Pickaxe
A magic item from the Elderdays, Kossus' Pickaxe is the creation of the legendary Ardon engineer and builder Kossus Bronzeforge.
Kossus' Pickaxe can be aligned to a creature spending one minute holding the pickaxe in quiet contemplation (i.e. no movement, no actions, no bonus actions, no reactions, no interaction with the world around them) and making a DC 12 strength save at the end of the contemplation (no automatic save, inspiration or other benefit to be used).
On a failure the creature takes magical bludgeoning damage equal to one x the creatures proficiency bonus, which cannot be prevented or redirected. No ceature can attempt to align with Kossus' Pickaxe for 24 hours, and the failed aligner not for 1 week.
A maximum number of Kossus' Pickaxes equal to half a creature's proficiency (round down) may be aligned to any creature at any time.
An aligned creature may use an action to activate Kossus' Pickaxe and in subsequent rounds use a bonus action issue new instructions such as "stop", "change direction" etc. Once activated the Pickaxe without needing to be held by the aligner or any other creature:
- can independently burrow through sand, earth, mud, or ice at the rate of 5" per round creating a tunnel 2" in diameter
- can burrow through stone stone at the rate of 0.5" per round creating a tunnel 2" in diameter
- will continue following its initial instructions until the aligned creature uses a bonus action or action to change instructions or the aligned creature is further away than proficiency bonus x 10" in distance from the Pickaxe
- can burrow for a maximum number of rounds equal to the aligners proficiency bonus x two per long rest
