Hestbane
The seeds and root of this clumping, inconspicuous grass are toasted and used as a coffee substitute. May also cause giddiness and a sensation of floating. It has an earthy, nutty, pleasant flavor, often not even needing sweetener. It is not as strong a stimulant as coffee, but has fewer side effects and is more easily prepared. The name “hestbane” comes from the fact that the seed heads have long clusters of bristles, which horses avoid as they stick in the throat. It is mildly addictive. Withdrawal consists of mild headaches, irritability, and light sensitivity.
Also known as: horse-coffee, kafferoot
