Rex Kinkaid
Rex Kinkaid was an L.A. homicide detective who got killed while investigating a murder on the set of Sam Milton's 1982 film, Queen of the Zombies. Instead of moving on to his eternal rewards or damnation, Kinkaid stayed on earth. Once he figured out what was going on, Rex assumed he couldn't rest until his solved his own murder.
Before he could do that, Rex had to learn how to operate as a ghost. He discovered that it had some definite advantages. In addition to being invisible unless he wants to be seen, Kinkaid's new form allows him to walk through walls and renders him nearly impervious to physical harm. Unfotunately, being incorporeal makes it very difficult to interact with the physical world. It also scares the crap out of people.
Eventually, Rex managed to master his ghostly form and discoverd that Milton, a powerful demonologist, was behind his death (as well as the murder he was investigating), but he still failed to move on to the afterlife. At this point, he's decided that he won't be allowed to rest until Milton has paid for his crimes. Since there seem to be a lot of those, Rex teamed up with Ampersand & Ampersand, offering his ghostly and detective services in return for help bringing Milton to justice. This was a mutually beneficial arrangement: A&A have had their own run-ins with and suspicions about Milton, but so far he's used his wealth, fame, and occult power to thwart them at every turn.
