The gods saved us. And for that, we burned.

Day after day did we savor the fruits of life. We were champions of innovation, and the very people we worshipped helped see that through. They walked amongst us all, as if they weren’t eons above us. And we loved them for that.

They started families. They presided over cities, countries. The same people who praised and worshipped them worked alongside them to bring this world further into new ages. We forged Assemblies to assess interplanar threats.

How ill-prepared we ended up being.

The Crownless King, a demon of uninhibited power and control, broke into our homerealm and brought an onslaught with him. A war that trumped anything mere mortals could mobilize. Even amidst our advances and technological victories, we dropped like flies. The gods sent their disciples, their soldiers, their best, but feared the damage they could cause if they directly intervened.

All but one.

Afreen, the God of War, stepped forth and felled tens of millions of demons in a single slash. The attack, grand as it was, carved through flesh, bone, and earth alike. Our world shattered and splintered apart. Many of our own were lost in the crossfire.

The gods were quick to act. The carnage unleashed by one of their own could not be ignored. They each voted to strip Afreen of his powers, ultimately killing him. His final act of defiance before he withered away was assaulting the Crownless King head-on, sending the demon lord through thousands of the Abyss’s infinite layers. His descent would soon end, as Afreen’s divine soul departed from his avatar’s body, locking the god’s corpse in the deepest of unknowns.

Debate toils on of whether the gods did what they could or if their intervention brought us to such a broken point. The question, ultimately, no longer matters. Humanity lives on. It is up to us to pick up the pieces, for the gods will no longer aid us in doing so.
