The Tale of Pawao

The most infamous tale with Pawao where he seduces a youth/maiden.

Summary

A young god named Pawao fell for a beautiful youth/maiden (depends on the version) who fed wild peacocks but refused any suitors, so Pawao transformed himself into a peacock to stay close and bask in their beauty. The youth/maid slowly grew fond of the transformed god and let him sleep by their side. One night, as they laid side by side, the god transformed back and seduced the youth/maid, impregnating them. As the gender of the beautiful person is very ambigeous in the original text, there are various versions with either a female or male lover, with the male youth actually laying and hatching eggs. In some versions, they conceive peacock chicks or incredibly beautiful children, though that is not always the case. Some tales have them giving birth to monster-like creatures that feed on Pawao’s lover.
