The Tale of Ji

A folk tale that became the basis for a game.

Summary

A young woman called Ji meets a young prince, who, however, doesn’t reveal his true identity. They spend five nights together. After their last night, the prince has to leave but promises to come back to her. Later, Ji notices that she is pregnant. She waits for a year and gives birth to a baby boy. Then she decides to go look for her lover as she didn’t hear anything about him for such a long time. She prays to the goddess of fortune to help her find him. While <goddess> hears her pleas, so does <god>, who had been jealous of the prince for a while. He appears in front of Ji and tells her that, if she can withstand seven trials, she will be reunited with her prince. She is shocked upon hearing that her lover is the prince but she agrees. The last trial is figuring out who her lover is between three identical looking men. As she only has one guess, she kisses each of them and thus picks the real prince correctly. There is a party game modelled after this tale, which is rather popular with young adults.
