Charles Pollens
Charles Pollens, known to friends as Chuck, is a lifetime astronomer and cartographer from Westkirk. His work includes the design and construction of the Pollens Observatory, a state-of-the-art telescope made possible in part due to the artificers in Sijmen Sur.
Pollens' life has been a comfortable one. His family is among the upper class, and is known as a frequent donor to the Arendale Monastery. He spent most of his early years studying the stars, learning to identify constellations and building navigational equipment for sailors. His career was at a standstill in his late 40s when navigational technology seemed to advance no further; this changed when he found an old book of star clusters deep in the library of the Arendale Monastery. It is said this ancient text is dated around the year 50 AU, and is in a language none can understand. The book's contents were cursed over the years by the aspects of stars themselves, emanating old, warped magic. Pollens studied this book well into his sixties, gaining access to expensive research grants using his family's wealth.
It was upon Pollens' 68th birthday that the book's contents opened to him. All of the sudden, strange glyphs and symbols weaved into complex patterns of stars in the night sky, delivering unto Pollens an understanding of celestial bodies far beyond his time. Pollens now keeps the book on his person at all times, and uses the knowledge and magic gained from it to fuel his inspiration for future projects. It is unknown what cursed the book, or what entity could be working through Pollens today...
