Ang’Verd

Arachnophobia Warning

A glorious city built upon the goals of prosperous harvests and food for the masses. A true gem within the wider network of subterranean cities.

Choice of Location

Deep within the south western region of the dwarven territories, Ang’Verd sits nestled within an area of huge reservoirs and water tables. Located reasonably close to the surface, the city also benefits from a continual ‘topping up’ of these water sources with little worry that the supply will dry up.   The externals of the higher city are caked with a dense and ancient sedimentary soil. This soil has astonishing properties and is able to produce root vegetables without the requirement for sunlight. Although the soil is not plentiful, efforts were undertaken to replicate or improve upon its properties. Some recent advancements have proved to be wildly successful in the rejuvenation processes that essentially make the soil reusable many times over.   In addition to the natural supplies of water and arable soil, the city is also placed close to large sandstone deposits which are easily quarried, shaped and tooled. Although, being one of the weaker materials utilised by the dwarves, it is solid enough to be used for non load bearing applications as well as seeing heavy use in record keeping.   One downside to the location of the city is due to erosion. The continual water damage causes widespread issues regarding structural integrity. Concerted building and restorative efforts are made in order to combat this constant change but many attempts fail and result in subsidence of entire areas. Usually affecting the lowest regions the worst.

Connections with the Local City Cluster

The city is located a vast distance away from others within its local cluster. The closest city being Bakan’Grod which is over one thousand kilometers away. The intercity cargo network does extend out to Ang’Verd but due to the distance, trains are scheduled days apart and have restrictions regarding the weight and quantity of goods that they can transfer back and forth. As a result, the supplies of foodstuffs from Ang’Verd are relatively modest compared to the output of the city overall.

Power Structures

The leadership of the city is primarily a monarchy with extended powers granted to chosen guilds and collaboratives. The royals claim their titles through their lineage that links back to the royal expeditionary parties that established the city over twelve dwarven lifespans prior. The ruling class here has not evolved into a people led state like many of the other cities. Instead, tradition has remained and change remains seldom seen. This is reflected in the ways that power is given. Mostly, it is offered to those that would look to explore and conquer their crafts and pursuits that would benefit the city or in many cases, the royals directly. However, this method of power transferral is usually additive and has been known to cause power vacuums that have been difficult to resolve.   Recent developments have resulted in the need to rebuild the existing power structure altogether and tackle some long standing issues that have been long neglected.

Foes and Threats

Although located far from the goblin swarmed regions of the world, a steady trickle of the foul seem to be able to continually migrate into their territory. On top of that, the natural fauna of the underground caverns and tunnel systems seemingly grow larger here. Giant trap-door spiders will happily carve out a sandstone slab in the walls, floor and ceilings to hide behind and await an oblivious bearded meal. Giant tunnel bats and the large populace of feral stags also prove to be a continual danger to scouting parties and travellers alike.   Instead of attempting to tackle and control the local fauna populations, the city opted to simply close its doors. Being almost entirely self-sufficient, there is little need to take unnecessary risks.

Not sure if the subsidence or the giant trapdoor spiders are more scary. Though I kind of like the idea of sandstone trapdoors.

Slightly ebbing sandstone slabs on a wall, floor or ceiling would be a giveaway... *if* you catch it in time.
