General Ulysses Darc
Author: Ulysses Darc
Summary: Born to be a noble, Darc ignored his responsibilities and spent his days training with an unnamed servant of his family. Once Darc becomes a major military official and dislikes Kilosway's military decisions, he and his servant leave for Jigwal, only for his trusted servant to die along the way. Darc notes his servant's admiration for various gods, especially war based ones, and decides to worship them in the hopes he will meet his friend in the afterlife. The rest of the text focuses on what's on his mind during the Darc War, which he refers to as "The Conflict of Borders." He expresses his philosophy on life without repeating too much of what was already said in Warrior of Warriors: a Guide to Battle, but still expresses how his ideas still remain consistent from that work. He ends the text saying he believes he will die soon to a mercenary and reminds the reader of his hope to see his servant once again, who he regrets having to refer to as a servant. The fact General Darc dies to an unnamed assassin a year after the book was released had people on edge over the ominous ending.
Important Quotes:
"My servant taught me everything I understand of this world, and I cannot express how important he was to me, for it is unfathomable to normal emotions. The way I talk is because of him, the way I fight because of him, and the words I use to pray are because of him."
"When my dear friend had died, my first thought was revenge, but I quickly disagreed with the notion. I cannot blame an animal for not caring about his life or mine. A shark is a shark, let the people of Aquatis tell you otherwise, I won't. Instead, all I could do was cry for a minute and carry his body with me to properly bury it."
"Though I love battle, it should be stated I do not overindulge in battle. My belief is that war is art, like a painter painting a picture, my mace is a brush of destruction. Though it is grim, it is true, my work is seen through my victories, and the cleanup is my composition."
"I have heard rumors that Reimog hired someone to personally take me out. I believe this to be true, for they can never claim my life in normal combat despite my age. If this should happen, I hope to convince the mercenary to battle me in one on one combat, for I believe any man would agree it is fair a warrior of war die in honorable combat. It would be a shame to my most trusted friend, my servant way before this time, if I were to die quietly in the night."
