Many languages are spoken across Halor and there is no one "common" language. For commerce and trade to flourish,
Tongueticklers were invented to allow communication between any peoples of differing languages. Still, access to magic can be an inconvenience and many educated individuals learn more than one language to enhance their social insight and flexibility. Below is a non-exhaustive list of common languages spoken in Halor:
Common Thrailian Languages
The languages are spoken across large swaths of
Thrail and would be supported by magical translation via most
Tongueticklers.
Ontalese
This language is spoken all across
Ontalia and is human in origin. It is the most common language spoken in
Thrail.
Mirathen
Spread by the
Mirathen Empire, this language has slowly been changed by the many cultures it was spread to and has very different sounding dialects based on where it is spoken.
Elfost
Spoken by originally by the inhabitants of
Fosturia, this lyrical language is known for its musical intonation and intricate script, and has spread to many areas on
Ormyst and northern Thrail.
Karaj
The language of most of eastern Thrail, characterized by its robust sounds and practical vocabulary, is suited for succinct dialogue that is easy to learn. Practically, its thousands of dialects confuse and befuddle even the most dedicated student.
Ellune
This language is ancient and evolved from the
Ellunivar. It is primarily spoken on
Eofas and some of southern Ormyst.
Primor
This ancient language is primarily spoken by
Swarmling and has its origins during the Age of Migration.
Gnalish
Gnalish is originally
Stonehoof in origin and is spoken in parts of western Thrail and northern Ormyst.
Orcidian
The rugged language of the
Orcidian Plains, known for its directness and emphasis on strength and honor. Orcidian has a straightforward grammar and a vocabulary rich in martial terms due to its Varth origin.
Thralian
Thrailian is the primary lanuage used on
Thrail across peoples surrounding the
Coricut Sea. It is a hybridization of Ontalese and Elfostian roots with modifications in modern times to simplify intonation and grammar.
Regional Languages
Regional langauages are more localized and have not spread outside their geographical origin.
Selsoni
Spoken mainly in
Entoshire, this language was created to combat the duplicitiousness of demons and as such as no homophones or similar contrusts that would aid in trickery or deciet. Butchered versions of this languages are spoken on the other side of the Crescent Sea, but they often fail the strict grammar. Thus there is usually a distinction: "High" (proper) Selsoni, and "Common" Selsoni.
Myrlic
This language is spoken primarily in
Sesekvar. A traditionally
Elvespian language, the difficulty pronouciation and grammar has cause this to fall off in popularity except by the most traditionalist adherents.
Pelinvic
The lanugage of the people of
Pelinovar.
Zaraquasian
Language spoken by those in
Zuraquas.
Rare Languages
Rare langaues are either lost to history and dead or are spoken by creatures an beings of another plane.
Celestian
A divine language spoken in
Celestia and used in holy rituals. Celestian is known for its ethereal sounds and profound theological vocabulary.
Druidic
A catch-all term for the various languages spoken by druids. While they differ quite a lot across cultures, sicne the basis of the language relies on natural order, many druids have an innate sense of what is being communicated in this language, even if they lack the ability to transliterate into their form of Druidic.
Vyrkish
An ancient language once spoken by the now-lost civilization of Vyrkish, known for its poetic structure and complex glyphs. Vyrkish is often found in old ruins and ancient texts, holding secrets of forgotten knowledge.
Demonic
The language spoken by devils and demons.
Deep Speech
The language spoken by Aberrations, the most bizarre and warped creations of Usos who often went mad and hid themselves in the darkest corners of existence.
Sylenivic
The language spoken by Fae.
Zothren
The cryptic language of the Zothren, a secluded group of scholars and mystics who lived in the Zothre Desert. Zothren is known for its esoteric vocabulary and coded messages, making it difficult to decipher without extensive study.
