Selkie Pelt

A Selkie Pelt is a magical otter pelt that allows the user to turn into a giant otter. This act binds the pelt to the user while the user is an otter. When the user transforms back into a humanoid, the pelt forms around them as a piece of clothing.    Selkie pelts are created when Selkies undergo the Test of the Depths, a magical ritual that can only occur at Mohomwa Cove. Only someone of selkie descent, with a direct line of inheritance from the people who once lived in the Khilaian Isles, can undergo this ritual and create a pelt.   Each pelt is tailored to the person who created it, reflecting their personality, self-image, ideals, and who they want to be. As long as a selkie keeps their pelt with them, it changes as they change. A selkie who begins to see themselves differently might take on a different shape in their otter form. These changes can be significant and include sex, size, and fur color.    The personal nature of a selkie's pelt reinforces the belief in Selkie Culture that a pelt contains a piece of that person's soul. For this reason it is considered outright criminal in the selkie Khilaia for any person to steal another's pelt. The Keepers of the Dead guard old unused pelts and track down stolen pelts. The Khilaia also tries to prevent the sale and purchase of a pelt.   Sharing one's pelt is considered extremely intimate as it is literally sharing one's soul, and many selkies consider it to be profane and disgusting to do under any circumstances. It is considered better to die than to sell one's pelt and those who do are considered subhuman to many selkies. These selkies and their descendants are the Peltless, the lowest of the low in Selkie Culture.
