Second Zeshem Empire
The Second Zeshem Empire was an experiment in Zeshem politics: a new government of religious fundamentalists who hoped to go all-in on the militaristic isolationism of the Zesheko religion. Compared to the First Zeshem Empire this was a brief experiment, but it still lasted two whole centuries.
A century ago, the Second Empire was remembered quite negatively as a corrupt and violent institution where elitist aristocrats wielded accusations of impurity like a bludgeon against any who challenged them. Now, though, the memory of those worse experiences have faded and many have begun to nostalgically reassess the Second Empire as a benign institution worth returning to in some measure.
The Second Empire created many of the institutions that are now considered timeless: the Law of Masks, which created rigid guidelines for what to wear when interacting with foreigners, was created by this government. The professionalized Hunters of Norinar also began in this period, changing the group from a cult of fanatics to an elite espionage organization.
The Second Empire went through continuous cycles of radicalization, calm, and re-radicalization; it was a system in constant reaction to itself and the world. It was fond of reacting violently against perceived threats, deploying spies and secret police against dissenters and responding to any foreign insult with military force.
This Empire ultimately collapsed after a recently-coronated Priest-King began a reign of terror targeting coastal cities, provoking a military rebellion from coastal garrisons. This led to the restoration of the old royal line in full control of the state after a year of civil war from 1810 to 1811.
