Throva

The Throva are an eastern race of Otter folk who live on the same landmass as the Naag. They usually live near the sea, rivers or lakes as their livelihoods often revolve around fishing or similar activities. They are usually very welcoming to other races granted they are not hostile and have a very friendly demeanour. I had the great pleasure of meeting them during the summer months where their towns are bustling with life. Market places were busy and the general noise was a treat to bear witness to. I found that the majority of them speak Root Ahmegg and, although their dialect is somewhat strange, it doesn't detract from their general appearance. I would love to visit them again, and one specifically. His name was Hilaan and he helped me get accustomed to the culture and the lifestyle. He was arguably the most hospitable person I had ever met.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Throva take the form of Sea Otters and have very thick, waterproof fur. They have long slender bodies that are very flexible and tails that taper. They have small ears and long whiskers that sprout from their cheeks. The males have thicker fur than the females as well as a wider chest. Female's tails are longer. They are one of the larger races of Haert, ranging between 8 and 9 inches tall when on standing up. Although, many Throva have a hunch or lean forward when they walk.

Biological Traits

The thicker fur of the male Throva allow them to be more efficient at hunting in colder waters and thus their hunting periods are longer than the females. The females however are slightly plumper than males allowing them to be better at defensive measures against predators, using their weight and slightly heightened strength to protect offspring and homesteads. Neither gender has a strict idea for these roles however, there are many cases where these roles are swapped or both will work in tandem.

Genetics and Reproduction

Guess, what? Same as before, move along.

Growth Rate & Stages

Throva newborns are birthed in litters of 2 to 4 and measure about an inch in length. They sleep a lot until they reach their early adolescent years and rely on their parents seemingly a lot more than other species. They reach adulthood at the age of 13.

Ecology and Habitats

The Throva mainly reside near moderate or large bodies of water. This provides the vast majority of their diet and also access to other resources such as herbs, reeds and mosses.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The Throva are omnivores for the most part, however fish, molluscs and shellfish play a huge part of their diet.

Biological Cycle

During the summer, the Throva spend most of their time in the water, gathering fish and other foodstuffs. But during the winter when the water is too cold to swim in, they will conserve their energy by sleeping nearly three times as much as during the summer as the days are shorter and energy in both the body and other fuels is much more strictly rationed.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

Their faces tend to be rounded and less angular than most other species. They have small ears that can plug themselves, small eyes and wide cheeks.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Most Throva live in the more western regions of Ahm nearer to the coast. However many have moved away and have been welcomed into Ahmegg territories.

Average Intelligence

Similar to an Ahmegg, however not as magically inclined.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The Throva have the ability to see in murky waters and block passage to their ears when underwater. They also have a great sense of temperature.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

The Throva have very fluid laws over what could be considered a name. Whereas Ahmegg names have syllable rules and the Russ are given names when they reach adolescence. Many Throva have multiple names given by different people, but often do have a preferred name.

Major Organizations

The Throva, being as humble as they are, will instead of creating a large settlement and call it a town, they will band large numbers of small villages together and provide them with a collective town name, all while keeping the names of all the smaller villages inside it.

Beauty Ideals

A Throva can vouch for a mate with a nice thick coat of fur and a cute facial appearance. They are less attracted to body shape and more the contour of the face and intimate details such as facial expressions. Generally, a happy and bouncy demeanour is all a Throva needs to feel attracted to you.

Gender Ideals

These tend to be rather fluid in the workplace and he home. They care little for specific gender roles and lean more towards the idea that if you are skilled at something, it's what you should pursue.

Average Technological Level

The technology level the Throva possess is a lot less than most of the other races, they lead simple lives with technology at a similar level to 13th century Europe.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

The Throva do have their own language but many treat it almost like a secondary, mandatory language one must learn as most grow up speaking either Root Ahmegg or Naag.

Common Etiquette Rules

They are very polite as a species and have many gestures and mannerisms that refer to different scenarios. One is raising one's tail as a sign of respect for an elder. Another is making a clicking sound with one's tongue as a polite greeting to the opposite sex. Another is addressing those younger then oneself as Enr (ee-nuh) which translates to Young Brother or Young Sister. Calling someone brother or sister is a sign of closeness and respect.

History

The Throva did not record their history until their contact with the Naag and the Ahmegg became more frequent. But their communities are full of folk tales, poems and songs that do have some merit in reality. They do not have large fables like the Ahmegg, Feng, SHRuss, Naag and Skoshi, but they do have famous poets and minstrels that have played their part in both their old and recent history.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

The Throva treat all the other races as their friends and, even if they do not understand the culture completely. As they have been raised to be polite and respectful it seems to be a trait that transfers onto other peoples different from their own.
