Influence in the NAPOX, both for Guardians and Fallen is Authority.
Guardians are given Authority by God as a just reward for faithful service. Their authority relates to the purposes of God, and is broadly applicable but only in accordance with those purposes.
Fallen are given authority (often unknowingly) by humans who are deceived by their lies. Their authority can be devastatingly powerful, but only in proportion to proximity with the granting human.
Authority as a game mechanic
AUTHORITY DETAILS
The power system of both Guardians and Fallen is “Authority.” SUPOX beings with greater authority can enact a wider range of actions, and the actions they take will have a greater magnitude of effect. This potential will be displayed as a level-based system, with attributes, perks, skills, and abilities. Authority is gained through taking actions, and more authority is gained if those actions succeed. Guardians are granted authority by god for obedience and effective service, while Fallen steal authority from humans by effectively preying on them.
HOW AUTHORITY WORKS
Each turn, the player will level up and select advancements for Melphus and any other Guardians assigned to Chevries in accordance with the points they have earned, and the AI will semi-randomly level up and add advancements to Fallen in accordance with the points they have earned
These advancements will increase the complexity and challenge of the game as it progresses, lead to emergent gameplay, scale difficulty, randomize the game for subsequent playthroughs, and provide story through subtext.
