The Rangthar are a species of Shroudspawn adapted to life in swampy, marsh-filled regions, prowling the murky waters of swamps, rivers, and marshlands. Resembling an enormous reptilian beast, they are covered in thick, jagged scales that serve as resilient armor. With a broad, powerful body, a long tail, and a maw full of razor-sharp teeth, they can easily tear through both flesh and armor.
These creatures possess a predatory cunning, often lurking beneath the surface, waiting for prey to come within range. When they strike, they do so with terrifying speed, dragging their victims underwater to drown or crush them with their massive jaws. Rangthar are amphibious, favoring the swamps but able to move on land when necessary, though they are most agile in the water.
Rangthar are often coated in mud and muck, blending seamlessly into the dark, swampy waters of their territory. Their small eyes glow faintly with predatory hunger, always watching for movement and waiting for their next meal. Primarily ambush predators, Rangthar remain still and hidden for hours, or even days, until an unsuspecting victim wanders too close.
Despite their size, Rangthar are incredibly fast and agile in the water, using their powerful tails to propel themselves toward prey with alarming speed. On land, they are slower but no less dangerous, using their sheer mass and strength to overpower anything in their way.
Rangthar are solitary hunters by nature, staking out their own territories within the swamps and marshes. They rarely interact with each other except during mating seasons and are fiercely territorial. When not hunting, they can be found basking in shallow waters or hidden in submerged lairs where they store the remains of their prey.
Despite their solitary tendencies, Rangthar have been known to cooperate during large-scale Shroudspawn incursions, especially when opportunities for feeding are plentiful. In such cases, multiple Rangthar may hunt together, though they will quickly turn on one another if food becomes scarce.
