Darkvision: You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.   Appraiser: All Procyons often dig through refuse in search of items of value. You have advantage on Intelligence checks made to determine the use or value of an item.   Mask of the Bandit: You are proficient in the Stealth skill.   Beastspeech: Through sounds and gestures, you can communicate simple ideas with Small or smaller beasts.   Lucky: When you roll a 1 on an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, you can reroll the die and must use the new roll.   Truly Nocturnal: Forest Procyons thrive in the dark, and fare poorly in sunlight. You have disadvantage on attack rolls and on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight when you, the target of your attack, or whatever you are trying to perceive is in direct sunlight.   Flicker: Once with this trait, you can choose up to 3 nonmagical sources of light (for example a small flame or floodlights) within 120 feet of you, that you can see, and block them with your own magical force for 1 minute, the lights dimming and becoming ineffective beyond 5 feet. This requires concentration as if on a spell. At the end of the duration, the light sources resume as normal. You can use this trait a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Basic Information

Biological Traits

Procyons are a race of small, slender raccoons. All carry the iconic mask, with black, white, and brown fur. They have a deep connection to the dark forests and high mountains they originate with, lurking in other people's shadows.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Procyons in cities are usually on the outer edges of societies for their strange appearance and former history. Things are getting better for them but many use this reputation and what magic they still have to their advantage. Procyons make good thieves, criminals, and lead in illegal trade. Not all are bad though, and many are trying to make an honest living in the city. For those in the forest, life is very different. They live in large groups that each guard their own territory along forest borders. In the day most sleep, leaving the bulk of the task to druids that have joined their cause. At night they hunt for food and any suspicious figures. On some days they'll even infiltrate urban areas, gathering information and potential problems.   In the mountins, Procyons are known to take over old dungeons and caves leftover by goblins, kobolds, and drawves. While not as knowledgable as those races about caves, they make for this with heir skill at adapting and learning.

Naming Traditions

City Procyons have adopted common human names entirely. Procyons still cling to tradition. Forest Procyons are given names that reference their physical attributes at birth, and then are given their true names after reaching maturity. True names are usually chosen by the Procyon themselves, perhaps referencing a new feature of their body or personality, a habit, a hobby, or how they use their magic. Birth Names Sawtooth, Blackpaw, Shortlegs, Darkmask, Fangburn   True names Darkblood, Seeker, Rocket, Shadowfur, Scarface, Plague,

History

Most Procyons used to live as the defenders of forests, wooded areas, and mountains. While urban areas kept expanding they'd keep it in check, lurking around the edges of the wild at night, tricking the foolish, and disposing of threats. Their connection to nature was just as strong as their connection to magic, using disguises, darkness, and your standard destructive magic. Eventually, as time moved on, the threat to their homes waned. Druids joined their forces, construction teams left them alone, and many Procyons even moved into the cities that were their former enemies. The number of Procyons in cities is growing, but those in the forest and mountains still guard it against the shadows.
