Southern Sergal Language Groups

The Sergal language groups are divided by Tonal (Lilting, Sustaining) and Rhythmic (Stuttering, Halting) features and then further by geographic distribution roughly corresponding to the movement of Southern Tribes. Each of the Language Groups above can have up to a hundred dialects. Only nine hundred have been documented so far, and it is estimated that at least a thousand more exist.

Depending on which tribes the Sergal of the given region may have contacted, a Lilting language may have some Stuttering or Halting features and a Halting feature may have some Lilting or Sustaining features. However languages of a Tonal or Rhythmic category by definition can never have features of the counterpart definition. However, these secondary features do not seem to impede understanding across dialects with the same geographic distribution and primary features. As a result, the 24 southern language groups are as follows, grouped into pairs of basic mutual intelligibility and numbered with their position on the map below:
