Rii-Ella
Goddess of Knowledge and the Written Word
Description of the Church
The Church of Rii-Ella, known as The Scriptorium Eternal, is a vast, scholarly institution devoted to the preservation, pursuit, and perfection of knowledge. Its temples are libraries, script-halls, and research towers where books outnumber candles and parchment dust clings to every robe.
To Rii-Ella’s faithful, every word written is a sacred attempt to understand existence. The Church does not care if knowledge is beautiful or frightening—it must be recorded, preserved, and passed on. Truth is divine. Understanding is worship.
Temples are often neutral sanctuaries for scholars, diplomats, and seekers. Even other gods are studied within Rii-Ella’s halls, their dogmas cataloged, compared, and debated.
Core Beliefs
- Knowledge is sacred, no matter its source.
- Truth must be preserved, even when inconvenient.
- Writing is a divine act, one that gives thought permanence.
- Ignorance is not evil, but chosen ignorance is sin.
- Understanding leads to freedom.
Religious Structure
The Scriptorium Eternal functions like a religious university or international knowledge order.
- The Archivist Primus – The elected leader of the central temple, responsible for maintaining the Church’s direction and canon.
- Wordbinders – Senior clerics who copy and curate sacred texts, often polyglots and philosophers.
- Loreseekers – Traveling scholars and scribes who recover lost knowledge and transcribe oral traditions.
- Glossators – Teachers who annotate sacred texts and lead interpretation circles.
- Inkbound – Acolytes who memorize, translate, and tend to the physical care of texts and their storage.
Rituals and Practices
- The Script Vigil – A ritual where texts are read aloud for a full day to preserve their memory.
- The Inkfast – A silent retreat to copy sacred works without error, believed to bring divine clarity.
- The Binding of Thought – A ceremony where a scholar publicly records their original insight or theory.
- Scroll of Reckoning – A rite of reflection where sins, questions, and truths are written and burned.
Followers
- Scribes and scholars, who devote their lives to study.
- Librarians, record-keepers, and judges, who believe truth must be documented.
- Historians and archaeologists, seeking to reconstruct the past.
- Teachers and archivists, preserving language, culture, and facts.
Conflict and Controversy
- Allied with Marawae’s Church, though Rii-Ella often favors structure over inspiration.
- Opposed by Elustra and Malaclypse, who value mystery and subversion.
- Internal debate between:
- Preservationists, who guard knowledge,
- and Liberationists, who believe all knowledge must be freely shared.
Temples
Temples are great libraries, towers of parchment, and quiet archives, often warded by enchantments of memory and fireproofing.
Common features include:
- The Scroll Vault, which houses forbidden or fragile texts.
- The Inkwell of Memory, used in rites of dedication.
- The Wall of Names, recording the greatest minds and lost tomes.
