iStone

iStone (Revision 1)   An enchanted communication device resembling a modern smartphone that has been modified to store and cast the sending spell 3 times. The iStone operates via embedded Aetherium as a spell conduit to remove the necessity for material and somatic components.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The iStone can maintain 3 charges of the sending spell and regains a single charge after channeling arcane power back into it. By 5e rules this would mean burning a level 3 spell slot to replace 1 charge (because sending is a level 3 spell). Lesser or Greater spell slots may be used to replace the charge. For example, 3 level 1 spells or 1 level 2 and 1 level 1 spell(s) charged into the iStone can replace a single charge of the sending capabilities. The iStone also has unlimited range following the rules of sending; however, if the message is attempted to go across another plane it has a 25% failure rate. The device can also withstand up to 5 points of non-magical damage; however, it is vunerable to magical disruption like a Dispel Magic would be treated like an EMP and cause the device to go silent. In order to operate the device any user can place their thumb on the screen and draw a circle to activate the power; once the device lights up and is listening you may speak your 25 words.

Manufacturing process

Core Preparation
  • The Aetherium and the 3 pieces of copper wiring should be soldered together to ensure that there circuits are evenly distributed. Leave excess wiring for placement and glyph attachment. On one piece of copper the small speaker from a communications device should be soldered while on separate piece the receiver should be as well.
  Screen and Casing
  • The screen and case can be ultilized from the same molding. For the screen, ensure that there are no blemishes in the quartz and glass mixture. For the metal, sand down thin and leave a small gap to be able to hold the copper wiring and aetherium shard. On the inside of the case, inscribe the glyphs and runes associated with the sending spell.
  Assembly
  • Place the circuit board into the case and then distribute the copper wires across the entire edge of the case. Each wire should take up the same about of length and each end should be touching where another loop starts. Place the screen on top and utilizing a minor magic circle seal it together. After this ensure that the device is capable of powering on and send out a test.

History

The iStone was Liora Cyst's ingenious response to isolation and the difficulty of staying in touch with her brother Ray. While its design is practical its aesthetics carry a personal touch with subtle engravings that symbolize their bond. This early prototype, though functional, is prone to quirks and presents opportunities for further enhancement.

The primary circuts are copper wiring infused around an Aetherium core. The screen is forged from quartz and glass. The case is a thin hardened steel that on the inside has carved glyphs outlining the rites and symbols of the sending spell. The speaker and receiver are remnants of the dead technology from previous communication devices that went dark after the fall of the abericlase.
