Asheron Coyle
Asheron Coyle
A Letter from an unnamed Pathfinder scribe, to Tamandra Cotts:
"To answer your question, once upon a time, he was a rank-and-file member of the Society, just like us. Trained at the Almas Lodge, ran with his own crew for a few years, traveled throughout Andoran, Galt, Taldor, Cheliax, Absalom, and beyond. Mind you, this was during the Revolution - just crossing all the borders would have been adventure enough. His party doesn't seem to have any significant records in the Chronicles, as it seems his group stuck mostly to tracking minor beasts and modest treasure hunts. Not that he would have needed the coin at the time, what with being born into one of the wealthiest aristocratic families in the nation.
His life is a real "riches-to-rags-to-riches" story if I ever saw one. When his parents abruptly died of illness, he stepped away from the Society and returned to Andoran. Soon after his return, the revolutionaries forced him to renounce all of his aristocratic titles upon threat of exile, and then confiscated the majority of his family's remaining land and assets, leaving Asheron with a pitiful inheritance. Using the connections he made during his travels and what little resources he had, he spent the next few decades trading various curiosities, artworks, and commodities, leaving behind the life of an adventurer for that of a merchant. Lately, it seems he's taken an intense interest in Andoran real estate, and has been snatching up both urban lots and rural parcels as soon as they hit the market.
Society records show that he completed his light weapons training from the House of Swords at the Almas Lodge, so he was no slouch with a blade, but it turned out that commerce and social graces are his true talent. His business ventures have been wildly successful - it's hard to find exact figures, but it's no secret, the man's filthy rich. I mean, his winter home is an estate in Absalom's Ivy Quarter! He also has friends, acquaintances, and business associates in some very high places - I'm talking about mayors, guildmasters, Lumber Consortium gavels, Consuls, Andoran High Councilors - those are just the ones we know about on paper. Strangely though, I cannot find any information about that assistant of his.
Stands to reason that living that kind of lifestyle would be a full-time job. I can only guess at reasons why he would make the effort to involve himself with the Society again, but word is, the amount of money he's been donating to the Grand Lodge is staggering. Yes, it's possible that he's up to something, but maybe the man's just gotten bored of his merchant-prince lifestyle and is longing for a taste of the good-old days? That might explain why the Ten allow him to call himself a Venture Captain, and why he's allowed to field-commission new recruits at will. Toss that kind of coin around, and even the Decemvirate might indulge an old man's nostalgia."
Jarn's Best Friends first encountered Asheron when he bailed them out of jail after they accidentally burnt down one of his newly-acquired properties near Sauerton. Thankfully, he wanted the property demolished anyway, as it was filled with all sorts of nasty things. Sensing their potential, Asheron soon field commissioned the Party into his Pathfinder lodge, and continues to act as their supportive patron. Asheron is a core member of the covert Liberty's Edge faction, and quests to thwart the Seven Houses in their attempt to infiltrate and control the Andoran government and subjugate the people of the newly democratic nation. To this end, he has leveraged his considerable fortunes to recruit capable talent, strike deals with the Decemvirate, and even buy up Andoran properties and land before it falls under the control of the nefarious Houses.
