Summer Camp '24 Prep

Week 1: Change

1.1: On Change

The world of Gokrenxia has seen an immense amount of societal change in a very short time. Yes, sixty years have passed since the Great War that decimated the Elven Empire. Yes, the animal-like Kynekin races, once a servant caste have won their power and their freedom, but now the grandchildren of the Great War stribe to adapt - to change - alongside this newfound freedom.   Themes of change: The rise of Kingdoms, Kings & Queens. The redrawing of geogrpahic borders. New social structures and organizations. Many Kynekin traditions, once taboo and practiced in shadow, now creep into the light. Cities rebuilt upon the ashes of the past.

1.2: Goals

For my first summer camp last year, I set a goal of copper and was incredibly pleased to achieve silver due to a late July vacation. This year, I have a lot more competing for my free time, so I’m going to once more set the bar for copper and enjoy the process and the inspiration when & where it comes.

1.3: Categories & Tags

While my world is still small in terms of content, my original strategy of having everything accessible straight from the ToC was already beginning to get unweildy. So, in preparing for SC23 I dropped all of my existing 3rd-level listings in the Table of contents.   After reviewing my SC23 work, I liked having a category for Summer Camp, and have staged one in Events > 2024. I expect to have 3 articles there:
  1. This pledge
  2. A hub article tracking all of my Summer Camp responses. For this one I’ll use the same model as last year, with tag lists for: #sc24copper, #sc24silver, #sc24gold, #sc24diamond
  3. A post-Summer Camp Reading Challenge page
As a fun aside from this review effort, I discovered a WA bug. In my Tales of the Inner Council Prose Category the Table of Contents links were ordered correctly, but the article display was no longer respecting article weight in ordering. Instead of Episode 1, Episode 2… Episode 10, I was getting lexigraphical ordering of Episode 1, Episode 10, Episode 2. With some outreach and dialog via Discord, SoulLink confirmed the bug and Dimitris quickly addressed the issue. So thank you Summer Camp, and thank you WA team for your constant support!

1.4: Meta Review

While there haven’t been major changes that impact Gokrenxia’s meta since writing it in 2023, there are certainly been some things that could be improved and refined. For instance, in the goal section, I had previously written my first goal was to have fun. Having poured a fair amount of effort into WA for the last year, I realize this passion is work, and sometimes work just isn’t fun. So I’ve refined my goal by dropping the “fun” target, and instead going straight to having a creative outlet.   One of the more significant RETCONs needed under the drama section was the mention of a “King” for the Dwarves. After the extensive amount of writing building out the Twelve Great Houses of the Dwarves, they’re social heirarchy has never included a King. That needed to be adjusted.   The Initial Active Setting needed some significant revision. The “Five Kingdoms of Men” never manifested. I’ve put only the slightest amount of focus on Al’Jmoor, the greatest kingdom of Elves (though I hope for this to get more focus in 2024). But largest of all, the “Dark Empire” I had initially imagined turned out to be the “Elven Empire” (which was quite the shock).   The “Current Species & Cultures” verbiage was removed, instead inserting links to the Articles for Myndikin and Kynekin.

Week 2: Refuge

2.1: On Refuge

Refuge has proven to be an elusive theme for me to consider as I've pondered it this week. It's not that I don't have any thoughts, but the ones I have feel bland and uninspired.   At the macro level, I find the Zuul’Hy Freelands to be the greatest bastion of refuge. Much like the old American west, these lands are filled with those fleeing persecution, hiding from their past misdeeds, or just trying to start anew. It may be interesting to explore the idea of cities of refuge in the Freelands, where beings are protected from reprisal for their crimes.   Broadly, I imagine home and hearth as generic places of refuge, where the hard-working souls of Gokrenxia return when the day's work is done. I imagine the Dwarven libraries of House Weymont and the mystical Elven school known as The Arcanum as a refuge for the academically-inclined.   On an individual and much more tragic level, I see overcrowding, lack of work, and dwindling resources in the remnants of the Elven Empire leading its citizens to take mental refuge through illicit drug use.   I wonder about organizations and groups of people offering refuge, protection, and safe harbor. Perhaps this could be a space to contemplate introducing an order of Knights within Human culture? Or perhaps even as a profession?   I expect Summer Camp prompts on this theme will prove to be very challenging for me, much like the Frontiers theme was in SC23.

2.2: Accountability

In addition to the awesome WA Discord community, I’m happy to have access to the smaller group of members in the 7 Tomes chapter. Getting out of my comfort zone, my fellow WAWA 2024 Best Newcomer nominee Tyrdal and I have agreed to try and encourage and inspire one another this Summer Camp.

2.3/2.4: Styling & CSS Updates

At the moment, I’m comfortable with Gokrenxia’s styling and CSS and am not looking to change things.

Week 3: Belief

3.1: On Belief

As a knightcore fantasy setting where groups of individuals can band together in order to bring about dramatic change to the world, belief as a concept is so fundamental to Gokrenxia I struggle to envision a way to untangle it. Even on a personal level, I feel belief drives practically everything people do. Nations have beliefs about their identity, their past, and their future. Broadly, the kynekin believe they have earned a right to their freedom. The elves believe they have been wronged and harbor much resentment toward the other races.   Cultures and organizations have beliefs around right and wrong, good and evil, worship, wealth, success, life, death, and the afterlife that bind people together under shared ideals. This is not an area I've explored deeply in Gokrenxia and would love to put some effort here.   Individual beliefs are where story and conflict happens. When two peoples' beliefs differ and come into contact, what happens next? Leaders have individual beliefs as to where their nations should be headed. People have beliefs (both for and against) their leaders, about places, behaviors, and traditions, even down to belief about ones family and friends.   I am particularly excited about the prompts surrounding belief as a theme.

3.2 Find Inspiration

One of my favorite things to do when I'm looking for inspiration is to unplug and go running. As a personal challenge for this prep, I went out and ran 11.5 miles (18.5km). It's the first time I've run that far in well over a decade and I have to say that it was an awesome where I really chewed on this week's theme.   I thought about how belief manifests in symbols: A dove represents "peace." A cross, or star of David represents faith. I pondered how beliefs manifest in song and traditions. Like how some cultures bury (or burn) objects with their deceased so they have access to them in the afterlife. I considered how beliefs shape art – its colors and themes and subjects – and warfare – its weapons and formations and tactics.   A few songs from my run that most inspired me and speak to the heart of Gokrenxia:

3.3: Inspiring Art & Pictures

A few images I put together to reflect some of the different aspects of belief I've mentioned here:

3.4 Meta Inspiration Review

I've never captured specific inspirations for Gokrenxia, but it doesn't feel like something that's lacking at the moment. For now, I'll leave things as they are.

Week 4: Decay

4.1: On Decay

With decay, my thoughts first go to the remnants of the First Age, before the fall of the Elven Empire. Cities left in ruins and the decay associated with battle. I think about an inquisition-styled organization dedicated to rooting out and eliminating moral decay within society. Such a heavy-handed group would fell well within my (largely undocumented and undefined) mental image of the Empire. There’s also the Shaf Yadursmaj - Jenta Hua’zur’s spy organization - whose symbol is the decaying black and gold leaf which represents their goals to see the continued undermining of the Elves.   I think about how the laws of decay affect magical energy over time. When a spell is cast, how long does it last? How fast do its effects decay?   I suspect decay will be an interesting and potentially challenging theme around which to write.

4.2: Last minute strategies

My sense that writing time this summer was going to be less accessible than last year is proving out, with a number of new time commitments I didn’t anticipate even as I wrote in Week One of this prep that I have more things competing for my time. If I’m going to reach copper, I’m going to have to be dedicated to writing. There’s a part of me that wants to try and knock out short articles for Summer Camp and then go back and update them afterwards, but the reality is I don’t like the idea of having to go back and fix things. My brain dreads it. So again, I need to stay focused on the goals I set on Week One, write when and where the inspiration hits, and strive to enjoy the process.

4.3/4.4: Review Your Homepage, Intro Article, and Author Page

I’m please to report that I recently added my Primer to the Gokrenxia homepage. I had hoped to have it up and ready prior to WAWA, but it just didn’t happen. It’s there now though, and I think it’s a major step forward in capturing the essence of the world.

That’s about all the time I have for SC prep. Thanks for visiting! Best of Summer Camp to everyone out there in WA-land!

Oh I can understand your concerns about the topics, I also had the most problems with Frontiers last year. I hope you reach copper and maybe even more. May the challenges bring us luck. What, you and Tyrdal are colleagues? That's interesting and nice that you support each other. And as Tomie I'm looking forward to inspiring chapter chats.

Summer Camp is back! Rippling waves lead you to my answers of this year's prompts.
