Grung (Grr-ung)

"My people just want to live quietly, away from other folk. Your people are killed by Grung because you keep poking the proverbial hornets nest. We don't care what your people do with each other, we just don't want to be apart of it. And yet, somehow, your problems end up becoming our problems. When it becomes our problem, we have to fight off the monsters coming from said problem. Please, just leave us alone."

    Additional Information

    Social Structure

In Grung society, the color of a Grung will determine their place in the caste. Each color is put into each job.   Green: Warriors, hunters, and general laborers.   Blue: Artisans and domestic workers.   Purple: Supervisors of the green and blue grungs.   Red: Scholars and magic users. Also known as grung wildlings, they were superior to purple, green and blue castes, and respected even by higher castes.   Orange: Elite warriors, with authority over all lesser grungs.   Gold: Also elite warriors, with the highest leadership positions. Every tribe leader was a gold grung.   Some mobility was possible between the castes, in cases of valuable contributions and great deeds, by the use of ritual magic and herbal compounds.

    Uses, Products & Exploitation

Grung poisons can be used for medicinal purposes, like pain killers. However, Grung poison is often used for hallucinogens, being the sole reason the drug called "Ullurik" even exists. Civilization and Culture

    Naming Traditions

Grung don't often use names in their society. Typically, they would just call each other by their Color, with the exception being Gold, Orange, and Red Grung, who were given a name by their God Nangnang. A Red Grung will commune with their god, who will in turn give the Red Grung the name for the young.   Grung who abandon their tribes who didn't have a name usually make one up at random.   God-Given Names: Imbok, Olokan, Hiromak, Ging'Gring, Liliuk, Kra'koun, Makap

    Major Organizations

A rat poison business called "Rataway," had managed to capture a grung Tribe, who called themselves the Ruiwlkam. The Grung's poisons were used for new special poisons, ranging from safe, non-lethal poison, to poisons that could kill up to a cat.   Some Grung had escaped from Rataway, being stranded in Groushad. They ended up forming their own Tribe of thieves, creating the name "Crok Ik Grung," which is translated to "The Dart Frogs," and became major rival to the Thieves guild.

    Gender Ideals

Grung males and Females serve the same purpose in a tribe or clan.

    Courtship Ideals

Grung do not get a say in who they can fall in love with. Typically, an Orange Grung will decide who can mate, and who they can mate with, among Green and Blue Grung, so that the caste system is never Challenged. Orange and Red Grung depend on the Gold Grung to allow them mates, and Gold Grung mate with any other Gold Grung.

    Average Technological Level

Depending on where you go, Grung either weild spears, daggers, blowdarts, and short bows, Or they wield Warpicks, heavy armor, crossbows, and shields.

    Major Language Groups and Dialects

Grung speak Grung, a language made up entirely of Croaks.

    Common Etiquette Rules

Grung typically shake hands for greetings and goodbyes. While this may seem completely innocuous, this maneuver is with extreme malice. Grung Know many people don't know about them, so when they meet new creatures they know aren't immune to poison, they are adamant in this greeting, outright insulting a creature that does a non-contact greeting.   Grung who have left their tribes or Clans tend to avoid contact with their greetings, often saying "Hello" and "Goodbye" at a distance, to avoid poisoning people.

    Common Dress Code

Grung usually wear bare essentials in their culture, meaning leather straps for holding items, foot protection for travel over dangerous terrain, and sometimes a hat.

    Culture and Cultural Heritage

Grung will mix their poison into a pot and feed it to a living creature to destroy their mind. They do this to those they deem as "Chosen." Chosen are humanoids who have gained a resistance to their poison, and they believe that those with this resistance was destined to be servants of the Grung.

    Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Grung have an odd tradition called "Slave Dance." Grung have a tendency to break the minds of trespassers, and will usually enslave these trespassers. These slave don't typically do anything outside of maybe growing food for the Grung. However, once every month, the Grung command their mind broken slaves to perform a dance. From observation, this is not done to humiliate them, but instead done to lift the spirits of the tribe.

    Common Taboos

Grung are not allowed to desecrate dead bodies, even the bodies of their enemies. Grung favor burial by sea, often taking bodies and floating out to sea on a makeshift raft, and setting fire to said body. Red Grung typically mixes different oils and their poison to create a special, highly flammable poison, and often use said poison to set fire to the body. Grung usually misunderstand just how heavy larger creatures are, and build rafts too small for their bodies. These bodies usually sink to the bottom of the ocean.

    History

Grung were created by the God Nangnang in 88wr, after creating the Grung on two different Islands. One Island was on an Island in the Isles of Julra, while the other was on Garathar. The Tribe on Garathar called the "Uulumek," lives in the trees, and are tribal in nature. When the Apidites and Tortles had shown up, as well as the Fey, the Grung would hide in the tree lines, in small ponds, in dense foliage, it didn't matter. They would utilize ambush tactics, poison-lined traps, and magic to fight off any perceived Invaders.   The Tribe found on the Julra Island, called the "Bou' ltra," was the luckier of the two. They lived like their cousins in Garathar. Unbeknownst to them, dwarves began digging out a stronghold underneath them, eventually being forced to flee from it by the Sahuagin. In 812wr, the stronghold was found by the Grung. Due to the nature of the sahuagin invasion, parts of the city where flooded, and everywhere else was incredibly damp, making it virtually impossible to forge anything in the hole, but the Grung used the dampness to allow them to exist without having to leave to bathe for an hour, where they can easily be attacked. The Grung also used a nearby underwater volcano to smith their weapons, so while very crude, their weaponry and armor was much more advanced than the other tribe. The Grung of Bou' ltra where extremely secretive, not leaving their hole until 997wr, as they needed food, and their root farms and mole farms where not enough to sustain the growing population. They used rafts to sail to other islands and would bring the animals back to their homes for farming purposes. In 998wr, the first interaction of the Bou' Iltra with a non-Grung had happened, with Jackleweres. The Jackleweres feared the Grung, as when they attempted to eat them, the Grung Poison would cause massive damage to their minds and bodies, and the Grung would retaliate by breaking tribes of Jacklewere's minds and enslaving them, which had caused such unrests that even the Khenra had to Intervene, out of fear that the Grung would begin attacking them.   The Calamity Event had heavily affected the Uulumek, while it had very little effect Bou' Iltra. During the event, the Ocean's had begun rising and falling, with Tidal waves being a common problem on mainland countries. However, on small islands, they caused flooding at relatively ease, and while the less Tribal species, like Khenra, Apidites, and Tortles had ways to fight off the flooding (Man-made sea-walls, moving to higher ground, having buildlings), the Grung would suffer the most. Due to their small stature, housing being out in the open, and living relatively close to the sea, many Uulumek Grung were swept out into open waters and drifted away from Garathar. Many died, usually due to starvation, as many fish wouldn't get near them, and many evil creatures couldn't eat their poisonous skin. The few that survived had landed on small islands, Bou' Iltra territory, and on the continent of Godsen.

    Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Grung hate and are hated by most other races. They have a particular hatred to Yuan-ti , Apidites , and Green Dragons . They also have a special hatred towards Bullywugs.   Yuan-ti and Green Dragons are immune to Grung Poison, so they either kill whatever Grung they encounter, or they enslave them. Yuan-ti also sometimes eats Grung, often using their different poisons as types of spices, and their eggs are a delicacy.   Grung hate Apidites due to their relative distance, as Grung can be found on islands with Apidites almost every time.   Grung and Bullywug hatred are rested both of their xenophobias. Grung believe that they are the ultimate Frogmen, with their poisonous skin and their abilities to work together. Bullywug believe that they are the ultimate Frogmen, with their superior strength and natural aptitude with clerichood. Whenever the two species encounter each other, they make it a point to fight to simply prove superiority.
