Riftwatchers
The Riftwatchers are a reclusive and controversial faction of scholars, mages, and surviving pre-Exodus intellectuals who study the Rift — the unstable gateway that tore open reality during the War of Displacement. They are both archivists of the lost world and cautious sentinels watching for signs that the Darkness may return.
Feared by some, respected by few, and misunderstood by most, the Riftwatchers walk the tightrope between forbidden knowledge and necessary vigilance.
Structure
High Watcher – External face and voice of the Riftwatchers. Often chosen for vision, neutrality, and magical endurance.
Watcher-Circle – Internal ruling body. Five senior Riftwatchers who vote on all major decisions.
Way-Seers – Field agents who travel Glacithae studying magical anomalies and Rift scars.
Sealed Hands – Silent operatives who manage containment, purge corrupted texts, and handle forbidden artifacts.
Apprentices – Learners and researchers inducted into the order, often sponsored by a mentor.
Marked – Members touched by the Rift or Void magic. Monitored and used in specific, often high-risk tasks.
Culture
The Riftwatchers are stoic, cautious, and fiercely rational. Emotions are often seen as a weakness in decision-making. Members undergo years of mental discipline, arcane training, and historical education. Knowledge is valued — but only when tempered by restraint.
Ceremonies are rare and often silent, marked by symbolic acts such as casting illusion shadows over one's eyes or burning “false truths.”
Public Agenda
The Riftwatchers aim to:
- Monitor and stabilize Rift-related anomalies.
- Prevent misuse of arcane knowledge from the pre-Exodus world.
- Safeguard Glacithae from a second cataclysm.
- Slowly reintegrate filtered knowledge to rebuild lost understanding without risking society.
Assets
The Observatory of Unmoored Stars – Their main headquarters and arcane library.
Vaults of Silence – Magical storage facilities for dangerous relics.
Field Sanctums – Temporary but warded stations across Glacithae.
Artifacts – Pre-Exodus magical devices, Rift-detecting crystals, and arcane tomes.
Trained Operatives – Skilled arcanists, researchers, and cursed but contained field agents.
History
25 AG – Founded by survivors of the War of Displacement seeking to prevent future magical disasters.
47 AG – Establishment of the first Rift-monitoring wards in Amoris.
93 AG – Internal schism over how much knowledge to release; faction of “Truth Unbound” breaks off and vanishes.
128 AG – Riftwatchers expose and destroy a Gloamseeker cell performing rituals to reopen the Rift.
182 AG – Riftwatcher-apprentice causes partial Rift breach; the first known incident of a Marked joining the order.
Present – Riftwatchers operate in secrecy and caution. Public trust is low, but other factions quietly rely on their vigilance.
