Chapter 4: Ghost Dragon’s Lair

At the center of the room in front of the altar there is a Ghost Knight with 2 Phantom Warriors flanked on both sides by rows of Specters. Adjust the numbers of Specters for the number and level of characters.

The characters need to put the orb on the altar to start the end sequence of the encounter.

The Ghost Knight points directly at the character holding the orb and in a horrific dead voice says “Get the orb!!”

All of the specters will rush towards whoever is holding the orb and attack. If the character reaches 0 hit points they drop the orb and one of the specters picks it up and moves back towards the dragon.

At the beginning each of the Phantom Warriors turns, say something to put fear into the players.

Phantom Warriors:

You won't survive this day!

You will join us in death!

You will suffer!

After the first round of combat the entire room of Phantoms and Specters chant:

The time is now, he is here.

At the beginning of the second round of combat:

The floor shakes under your feet. You hear a horrible dragon's roar echo throughout the temple. On the platform behind the moat you see green flames rise 15 feet into the air as a ghost dragon climbs up out of the platform. It gets its footing and then launches another roar directly at you and you can feel the dragon's breath rush past you. The dragon raises its wings high in the air.

At the beginning of each round the Ghost Dragon flaps its wings and a gust of wind blows the characters back 15 feet.

If the characters perform ranged attacks against the dragon it takes damage but doesn't react.

If one of the characters performs a melee attack the dragon uses:

Terrifying Breath (Recharge 6). The ghost dragon exhales shadowy mist in a 90-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 21 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 40 (9d8) cold damage and is frightened of the ghost dragon for 1 minute. On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage and isn't frightened.

While frightened of the ghost dragon, a creature is paralyzed. The frightened creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to this ghost dragon's Terrifying Breath for the next 24 hours.

Adjust the damage done by the level of the characters

When one of the Characters places the orb on the altar read:

The moment the orb touches the altar it turns bright white and blasts a wave of light in all directions.

The specters will now try to remove the orb from the altar, but the orb is held in place by magical energy. On each spectors turn roll a D20:

(1-10) The Spector gets burned and takes 1 point of damage and fails to remove the orb.

(10 - 18) The specter fails to remove the orb.

(19 - 20) The specter removes the orb from the altar but cannot move until its next turn.

If the orb remains on the altar for 3 rounds it destroys the Ghost dragon and any remaining phantasmic forces.

The orb fires a sunlight beam into the Ghost Dragons chest. The light builds up inside the Dragon and pours from its eyes and mouth before exploding with enough force to knock down everyone in the room. The orb continues to pulse light into the room until everything becomes purified by the light. Orb then goes back to its original state with only a faint pulse every second or so.

After a few minutes a 6 foot wide portal opens at the end of the temple where you first dropped in. The characters hear a familiar voice call to them:

Come now, I can’t keep this open long..

After the characters go through the portal they see Mother Blackwood on the other side concentrating on a spell that has opened the portal. Lord Hastings and many of his guards are here with her. When the last of the characters exits the portal Mother Blackwood releases the portal spell making a loud swishing sound.

Mother Blackwood:

The day after you left the Bastion a bad feeling came over me and I realized you may need help on this one. But I see now, I was worried for nothing. (As a large smile forms on her face).
