M-202 Erebus (air-uh-bus)
The Erebus is a fairly new rifle only serving on the frontlines for a decade. It has made a name for itself because of its higher fire rate than its predecessor, the Manitou, while still being hard hitting. Many Republican units are armed with Erebus rifles, making it a common sight on modern battlefields. Chambered in 30-6 and fires from a breech loaded 10 round metal en bloc clip that is ejected after the last shot with a lound metallic "ping!"
2D8 piercing per attack (2 bullets per attack)
+3 on hit rolls
Can use 3 modifications (sight and muzzle ammunition)
Range: 300 ft effective 1,500 ft max
Mechanics & Inner Workings
The Erebus operates using a toggle locking delayed blowback action.
Upon firing the rifle, the toggle mechanism causes the breech block to shoot upwards at a 95 degree angle, ejecting a spent cartridge before slamming back down to load the next one. This process happens in a fraction of a second. Upon firing the last shot the en bloc clip is ejected and the breech block is locked in an upright position.
After loading a fresh clip, the breech block must be pulled slightly back to disengage the lock. Once unlocked, let go of the block and let it slam forward to chamber a round. If you gently slide it down the round may load improperly and cause a malfunction.
Significance
The Erebus might not be the first semi automatic rifle to go in production, but it was the first to see widespread use on the battlefields of Ghala. It's unique firing mechanism has become iconic, as has the loud metallic "Ping!" the weapons clip makes when it is ejected.
