The Great War

"Just as Nature has set about a constant improvement of Her species, so has Civilisation whittled away the base and cruell aspects of the Humanities so where once War was the natural order of the World, and Peace something achieved and kept by great men, now do average men keep what was once so dear and fleeting, and War becomes a distant horror of the past."

—Guy de Houmréine, 2763

"Whereas, the Enzimian Imperial government has acted in aggression and in a manner in violation of the treaties between Tira Vella and Treima by making cruel war against her, they have entered into a state of war as well with the Republic of Tira Vella. Therefore, it is resolved by the Assemblies of the Republic of Tira Vella this twelfth of The Dusk, two thousand eight hundred ninety-one of the Common Age, that a state of war, initiated by the Holy Enzimian Empire, is formally recognised between the Republic of Tira Vella and the Holy Enzimian Empire according to all international laws, and that the Cyreonian Ephor, his cabinet, and the Ministry of War are hereby authorised to exercise the entire naval and military force of the Republic and resources of the government to make war against the Enzimian government and to bring the conflict to a satisfactory conclusion."

—Declaration of War by the Tira Vellan Parliament, 12 The Dusk, 2891

"Past the first million or so, sir, I don't really think anyone's out here dyin' for their country anymore."
"Well then what cause are you dying for?"
"Mostly dyin' 'cause o' too many enemy shells and not enough nurses, sir. The Areltyan fifth's up on that hill, an' it's up to us to shove 'em off it. You wanna help yer country, sir? Drop the pen an' help me carry these Yakiv belts to the MG."

on the Eastern Front near Varkuń, 5 Lit Hearth, 2893

The Great War is an ongoing global conflict between two coalitions: the Western Powers and the Eastern Powers. Main areas of the conflict include two major fronts in Sossis, Chazderma, and Aresra. Important military technological developments, such as the machine gun, breech-loading artillery, chemical weapons, and motor vehicles including aircraft and tanks, have made the conflict one of the deadliest in history, with an estimated 18–25 million casualties as of Deadfire, 2893.
The war began following the Second Chazhdurm Emergency that arose following the killing of six Enzimian Colonial Pacification Force soldiers in the Lower Chazhdurm capital of Khatyanghatar. A failed weapons confiscation operation on 17 Deadfire, 2891 turned into a protracted siege of the city. Hģoną Mǫrruźc, one of the men who orchestrated the attack on the CPF soldiers, was suspected by Enzimian authorities of taking refuge in Treima, and they began a blockade of the country to coerce the Treimans to hand over Mǫrruźc. Negotiations broke down when a Treiman merchant vessel was sunk attempting to leave the blockade, and on 11 the Dusk, the Enzimians invaded the country. Tira Vella, in accordance with her alliance with Treima, declared war on Enzim the next day. Various other states followed suit according to their alliances.
Quickly, two major fronts developed in Sossis, one in the east between Areltya and Enzim and the Sunaïds, and one in the west between Ros and Dvekmenia, with Tira Vella sending forces across the Gyaros Strait to both fronts and Taminily sending forces to Areltya. Limited fighting began elsewhere between Oecumenian colonies, particularly between Tira Vellan Davania and Rossan East Davania. The Eastern Powers made quick incursions across the Narrows and into

Areltya. A gap was opened in the line of advance between the Enzimians and Sunaïds, unknown to either power, and Areltyan forces were able to plunge into the gap and hit the Eastern forces from the rear, forcing a retreat. The Eastern forces soon entrenched and a line of defensive works developed from the Sunaïd border to the North Sea. It quickly became clear that open warfare, as had dominated Oecumenian wars for centuries, was a suicidal endeavour in the face of modern military advances, and so the front has ground to a bloody stalemate, with neither side able to effectively advance against the other.
The Western Front, by contrast, has gone back and forth between offensives and counter-offensives in the much more mountainous west of Sossis. The Dvekmenians have relied heavily on assistance, both in men and materiel, from the Tira Vellans in their fight against the Rossans. Despite sharing a border, the Sunaïds and Dvekmenians have refused to declare war on each other, and so there is no active fighting between them.
