Inventory

The inventory system is based on a grid. Different items take up different amounts of space. Several of something small like pieces of paper, ammunition, or food may be able to fit in one grid space, while something larger like a rifle, a pickaxe, or an instrument may occupy more than one grid space. A character is able to hold one item in each hand, provided the item can be held in one hand. If they are wearing clothing, they also have five pockets. The number of pockets can be reduced by wearing armour (see Armour). They can also have up to two holsters or scabbard, which fit alongside their body. A holster can hold one ranged weapon with the Compact or Concealable property, and a scabbard can hold one melee weapon 4 units or less in any direction. A larger weapon may be kept on a sling or held. A character cannot carry more than can fit in their inventory and hands.

Backpacks

Besides their hands and pockets, a character may wear a backpack, which provides additional space. There are three different sizes of backpacks: small, medium, and large. A small backpack has a size of 3 grid spaces by 4 grid spaces. A medium backpack has a size of 3 grid spaces by 6 grid spaces and requires a Body score of 5 or higher to wear properly. A large backpack has a size of 4 grid spaces by 6 grid spaces and requires a Body score of 6 or higher to wear properly. Wearing a backpack without meeting its Body score requirement reduces a character’s movement speed by half.

Additional Space

If additional space is required, sacks and pouches may be attached to a backpack. A sack has a size of 2 grid spaces by 2 grid spaces, and a pouch has 1 grid space. A sack or pouch attached to a backpack goes alongside the backpack, meaning one side of the sack or pouch must be in contact with the side of the backpack. This means to attach a sack to the side of the backpack, there must be at least 2 grid spaces on the side edge of the backpack that nothing is attached to. For example, two sacks, four pouches, or one sack and two pouches can be attached to each side of a small backpack, which has four spaces on each side, before running out of space. Keeping a weapon on a sling or in a scabard on a character’s back occupies an entire side of a backpack.
