Backgrounds
Your character’s background represents what they did or who they were before starting their adventure. Think of background sort of like your character’s class, though it’s more of a starting point, and less determinative of your character’s future than a class option would be. Your background gives you your starting proficiencies and a few features. Some perks do require specific proficiencies, however, so do be aware of that. If you want to create a character who engages the dark and taboo of magic, a soldier who’s never read an occult treatise in his life would make a poor starting point.
These are not all the possible backgrounds that exist. Feel free to workshop a background for your character with your Game Master. Pick 4 to 6 skills to have proficiency points in, plus a few free points. A background should grant a total of +7 Skill proficiency or +6 Skill proficiency and +2 language proficiency.
