Rekfas Betrayal

Summary

Rekfas, after staying back to guard the Seal, while the other Dragons explored the Universe, grew tired of his Watch, and ever more frustrated and angry. Feeling abandoned, angry and alone, he grew susceptible to corruption.   It's unclear who was responsible, for even the Dragons don't know, but someone opened the Seal just a bit, letting a sliver of Darkness escape.   That sliver found a home in the depths of Rekfas' mind, growing, feeding on his anger, and in turn nurturing it corrupting him, until eventually it became all consuming and took over. And so, the next time the Dragons returned from their journeys, Rekfas, now empowered by the Darkness attacked, catching them off guard, managing to latch onto them, and draining some of their divine power, before trying to break the Seal.   Weakened and surprised the other Dragons fought back, and while they managed to prevent the Seal from being broken, they could not defeat Rekfas easily, for he, empowered by the Darkness, and the power he had stolen, rivalled their combined strength.   And so the fight went on, back and fourth, and it forever altered the shape of Gerandia.     During the fight, Darag believed to see a chance, an opening, and he charged. But he was deceived, and Rekfas was prepared, throwing him down onto the Mountains of Sal'Nirdai, drenching them in the Dragons Blood.   Darag, realising his mistake, tried to escape, but he did not make it far, before Rekfas dealt a final blow. Darag collapsed to the ground, before turning to stone, his body becoming the largest Mountain on Gerandia, Thunderpeak, and the adjacent mountain range.   However, this brief Moment of Triumph, should prove to become Rekfas downfall, as the remaining Dragons seized the opportunity, as he was distracted, and they managed to subdue him, holding him in place.   Rekfas fought back, his fiery breath, melting the ground and setting it on fire, never to be extinguished. The dragons hold on him began to slip, but it had been long enough for Aviro and Morghalia to banish him onto a prison plane hidden away in the Void Beyond   The aftermath of this fight, left large parts of Gerandia devastated, large parts of it's population dead, the first thriving civilisations, wiped out, before ever reaching their peak.   But with the danger gone, the world could look into the future, and while the mortals on Gerandia set out to recover from the sudden, near apocalyptic events and to start rebuilding, the dragons began to wonder how this could have happened.   As it became clear, that a sliver of the Darkness had escaped, the question arose as to how it had happened. Being unable to answer this question, they resorted to blaming one another. As the debate went on, the mistrust amongst the dragons grew, and a schism formed.   Eventually, unable to solve the problem, they retreated to different planes, from there on keeping a watchful eye on one another, as well as on Gerandia, to make sure such a catastrophe could not repeat.

Historical Basis

Rekfas betrayal of the other Gods itself is a documented fact, however most of the information and evidence for it, has been provided by various deities, via their clergy, as no historic records from the time have survived.   The combat altered the geography of Gerandia in a significant manner that can still be seen today. The area set aflame by Rekfas, became the eponymous Rekfas Mountain, while Darags Body now lies in Naherad, with his Head becoming the Thunderpeak, and the rest of his Body forming the Darag's Spine and Darag's Tail  Mountain Ranges.

Spread

This story is considered common knowledge, and accounts of it can be found in the religious writings of all of the major religions on Gerandia, and many of the minor ones.   While most people are aware of it, only the religiously educated tend to know the complete details, whereas the general public tends to only be aware of the major aspects of this myth.   Those aspects being the fact that Rekfas betrayed the other gods, and was subsequently banished, but not before killing Darag.

Variations & Mutation

Due to the fact that the story of what happend varies between the followers of different deities. there is a lot of debate as to the impact of the individual Dragons on the fight. Another subject of speculation, is how the Sliver of Darkness managed to escape through the Seal, with some fractions going as far as claiming that it was Rekfas who made a pact with, and freed it, or even that the Darkness wasn't involved, and it was just Rekfas wanting to overthrow Aviro, out of a thirst for Power.   Another common version asserts that it was Daemor who helped that Sliver of Darkness to escape, in an attempt to balance the Universe.
