Lumining
Lumining is the practice of flooding one's room with light before sleeping. In most of Arnor, especially Archais, the light of the Brightspire is reflected with mirrors so that every corner of every room is full of the eternal sunshine of Eltravu. As a result, most Arnorians sleep in the equivalent of full daylight, and are superstitiously afraid of shadows and darkness.
When Arnorians travel outside of Arnor, they are frequently unable to sleep in darkness. While the more adventurous Arnorians simply sleep during the day, the more common practice is lumining at night. This involves a room or tent with reflective surfaces on the walls and a vibrant source of light - candles or lanterns can be dangerous to leave burning while asleep, so this is usually a Vu Amulet. This allows the space to be completely shadow-free and bright, which is more comfortable for Arnorians.
History
Shortly after the Arrival, Arnorian civilization was tightly clustered around Archais and the Brightspire. As Arnor expanded at the command of Eltravu, settlements reached the natural limit of the Brightspire's constant radiance. Mirrors, Vu-lights, and candles helped these early settlers create permanent outposts of light during the night. However, even Vu-based technology could only illuminate so much.
As Arnor encountered other civilizations, particularly the traders of Laoja and the Islands, they realized the need for more portable ways to carry light with them. Outgoing Arnorians are typically able to tolerate the unfamiliar nights of the rest of Gelinia, but even the bravest among them have difficulty sleeping in darkness. The obvious solution was to simply carry a Vu-powered amulet that produced an intense radiance at all times. However, this was highly disruptive to other races, and even the brightest amulet was not uniform and produced many shadows.
Thus, the practice of lumining was born. The Vu Amulet is kept dim for most of the day, but when it is time to sleep, the Arnorian will sequester themselves in a mirrored space and release its brilliance. The light mimics the eternal day of the Brightspire and is said to ward off nightmares and evil spirits.
Before the Cataclysm, Yttria specialized in producing tents and tavern rooms lit by luminous fungus, but the cultivation technique was lost afterwards. To this day, however, Laoja and some regions of the Islands keep special, silvered tavern rooms for the rare traveling Arnorian. In the absence of specialized rooms, most Arnorians are forced to carry bulky, mirror-paneled tents with them wherever they go.
