Torog

The Crawling King

Torog, the Crawling King is an evil god of torturers, slavers, and jailers. His worshippers are those who take others' freedom and creatures living in the darkness below. It is said that pathways under the world are the result of his tears of pain and anger, and his realm is a network of deadly caves and manacles. He is defeated during the Calamity by the Dawnfather and the Everlight.   Torog is the evil god of The Underdark, patron of jailers and torturers in the Astorian Pantheon. Common superstition holds that if his name is spoken, the King That Crawls burrows up from below and drags the hapless speaker underground to an eternity of imprisonment and torture. Jailers and torturers pray to him in deep caves and cellars, and creatures of The Underdark revere him as well.

Tenets of Faith

Seek out and revere the deep places beneath the earth. Torog is said to live within an enormous cavern in a realm similar to that of the Underdark. Priests and worshippers of Torog alike are called to offer worship in caves and similar underground places. These locations are sacred to the King That Crawls. Indeed, the Underdark (and its counterparts in the Feywild and the Shadowfell) is said to be one of Torog’s contributions to creation of the mortal realms. Torog despises sunlight, fresh air, and open places beneath blue skies. Far better to dwell in the cool, bleak darkness underground.   Delight in the giving of pain, and consider pain you receive as homage to Torog. Pain, suffering, and torments are sacred concepts to Torog. He blesses both those who inflict as well as those who suffer. He offers guidance and suggestions to the torturer, the jailer, as well as words of sorrow for the victim and the prisoner. Because Torog’s worship involves both giving and receiving of suffering, his clerics must undergo numerous harsh, painful rituals throughout their careers (see the section under “Limitations & Sacrifices,” below). Inflicting and suffering pain are blessings, and all creatures must learn to appreciate such trials. After all, pain is one of the easiest ways to discern the living from the dead. If you feel pain, you should consider it a blessing – it means you are still alive.   Bind tightly what is in your charge, and restrain those who wander free. Just as important as pain to Torog are the power of the jailer and the suffering of the imprisoned. The King That Crawls collects creatures, relishing the opportunity to devour their freedom and their hopes. That which lives free and unfettered is anathema in Torog’s eyes, and such creatures must learn the truth of existence. Imprisonment and suffering are the twin teachers of truth for mortalkind. Stealing a creature’s freedoms and, ultimately, its will to live is the greatest form of power any mortal can hope to attain.

Commandments of the Crawling King

  • Seek and exalt places where no light touches.
  • Revel in the pain you inflict upon others, and relish the pain you suffer yourself as an offering to the Crawling King.
  • Imprison those who cannot resist you, and drag all life into the darkness.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

When Torog appears before his followers, it is a terrifyingly gruesome sight. He appears as a massive hairless human, covered from head to toe in smoldering burns and bleeding lacerations, he drags his broken legs behind him with his huge powerful arms. Torog has fifteen bones shoved through the top of his skull, which he treats as his crown. His wounds are deeply infected and they never heal over, his eyelids and cheeks are nothing but bleeding holes set forth in his head and he always has blood in his eyes. Torog is wrapped in chains and has the blades of various immortals pierced into his body.   Torog is largely depicted as a swollen, malformed worm slithering through the darkness below with a hairless human head at the helm, three arms carving through a lightless rock.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Torog was once a god of virility and health, renowned for his invulnerability and strength. In the days before the War of Creation, Torog had a hated rival, a monstrous primordial named Gargash, who went deep into the earth to experiment with powers of torture and imprisonment. Frustrated by the dark tidings that he heard of Gargash's experiments, Torog entered the Underdark in order to destroy his nemesis at the moment before the War of Creation broke out between the gods and the primordials. Because of this, Torog and Gargash were thus both left behind and did not participate in the War between Gods and Primordials. Instead, they fought a violent battle with each other, in which Torog finally gained the upper hand. As Gargash felt his strength disappearing, he cursed Torog to never heal from his wounds and to never be able to leave the deep places of the earth. Once his enemy had fallen, Torog set about attempting to return to the surface, but found himself unable to do so without losing all his power. His body broken and bleeding, Torog spent eons crawling his way through the deep places of the earth, carving out the seemingly endless tunnels that would become known as the Underdark. His mind broken and twisted by the pain, Torog settled himself as the god of the Underdark and torture, inspired by his torturous attempts to leave for the surface with his permanently broken body. After the War of Creation, the Benevolent gods finally found him, ruling his dominion from within the corpse of his fallen enemy Gargash. They did not like what they saw of their old friend. Torog has become an evil, twisted shadow of his former self, and the Benevolents were forced to put an end to his machinations. Torog is banished to the Far Realm, dragging his Underdark realm of Gargash with him.
