As firearms became more common around
Chronan, the focus of military training moved from melee combat to ranged tactics. Soldiers trained in handling firearms, bows and crossbows are commonly called
marksmen in the military of the Eight States, and they form the majority of the force in the
Air Brigade.
Unlike subclasses with similar expertise, such as arcane archer fighters and
magunner rangers, there is nothing magical in marksmen's skillsets. They just excel at fighting from a far and focusing on a single target at a time.
Marksman Features
This martial archetype is only available to fighters who have chosen the
archery fighting style at 1st level. The marksman benefits from having high Dexterity.
3rd level: Sniper's Mark, Steady Aim
7th level: Eagle-Eyed
10th level: Improved Archery
15th level: Marked For Every Move
18th level: Marked For Death
Sniper's Mark
When you choose this martial archetype at 3rd level, your attacks are improved if you focus them on one target. After the first time you hit a creature with a ranged attack on your turn, you can spend your bonus action to mark it for as long as you can see it, or until it dies. You can only have one creature marked this way at a time. This effect ends early if you are incapacitated or you die, or if someone else marks the creature.
As long as you do not attack other creatures, you never have disadvantage on the marked target as long as you can see it, and the creature does not benefit from half cover or three-quarters cover against your attacks. Furthermore, when you attack a creature you have marked with a ranged weapon, your weapon attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20.
Marking a creature gives you further benefits at later levels.
Steady Aim
Also at 3rd level, you learn to aim better with your weapon if you do not move. As a bonus action, you give yourself advantage on your next attack roll on the current turn. You can use this bonus action only if you haven't moved during this turn, and after you use the bonus action, your speed is 0 until the end of the current turn.
Eagle-Eyed
At 7th level, your eyesight has been honed by your usage of ranged weapons. You gain proficiency on Wisdom (Perception) skill. If you already have proficiency in it, you gain Expertise in it, doubling your proficiency bonus. You make Perception checks related to sight with advantage.
Improved Archery
At 10th level, your archery fighting style is improved. Your bonus to attack rolls you make with ranged weapons increases to +3. You also add +3 to your ranged weapon's damage when you hit a creature you have marked with your
Sniper's Mark feature.
Marked For Every Move
By 15th level, your focus allows you to anticipate your marked target's every move. You gain +5 to your Armor Class against attacks from a creature marked with your
Sniper's Mark feature, as well as advantage on all saving throws imposed by them.
Marked For Death
At 18th level, when you use a ranged weapon to attack a creature you have marked with your
Sniper's Mark feature, your weapon attacks score a critical hit on a roll of 16-20.
