Deepherb

The seeds of the deepherbs are hardy and durable, and will spring to life when exposed to air, water, and any amount of light. All three plants grow only 1 mile or lower below the surface, becoming more verdant and robust the deeper they are grown.   All are excellent at recycling air.

Deepspice

Description

A woody, kudzu-like purple-black climbing, coiling, and trailing perennial vine known for the intense burning sensation it creates in the mouth when consumed. It's remarkably nutritious. Deepspice can be bred for a variety of pungent flavors and intensities.

Uses

  The vine and roots of the Deepspice plant are commonly dried and ground into flakes for use in food as a spice. The roots also contain starch, making it a common food ingredient in multiple Underdark dishes. The sap, meanwhile, is either turned into syrup or fermented to create a pungent alcoholic drink not unlike rum. This drink is a favorite both at parties and on the battlefield alike, as it is both an antiseptic and will neutralize any poison placed within it.

Deepsweet

Description

Colorful little trees known for having as many flavors as they do colors. Looks a little like a rainbow maypole, its leaves streamer-like and flowing. A crown of brightly colored berries grow at its highest point.

Use

Fermentation of Deepsweet berries produces a sweet alcoholic beverage - and a unique experience! Goblinoids would probably refer to it as "like champagne plus pop rocks" if they had any idea what those two things were. The products of the tree are less corrosive to both teeth and general health than normal sugar.  

Deepsour

Description

Small, crawling bushes with stark white foliage and sap, dotted with red, black, and white berries. These fruits resemble the human eye, with a bright red shell encasing a black seed covered by a white aril.

Use

Fermentation of Deepsour berries produces an alcoholic beverage not unlike a tart, sour beer. Oddly enough, this liquid doesn't seem to be capable of holding any heat - allowing it to double in use as a kind of liquid coolant.  

Hybridization

While each plant can be bred within its own species to create new and unique flavor variants, all species within the genus itself can interbreed. For example, the hybridization of a deepsour and deepsweet plant would produce a seed for a plant that would create fruit that is simultaneously sweet and sour. Complex flavor profiles can be constructed with the use of hybridization, though the process is a tricky one.
