Aerocore

Aerocore is a kind of stone with the texture of dolostone and the look of dark gray marble. Large volumes of aerocore maintain their position relative to the land below at all times, defying gravity, and in large quantities also exudes a field which sets the pressure and temperature of the air around it with a radius of up to half a mile, and weakens any wind entering this area. If you try to hit it with a hammer or blow it up with dynamite the force will mostly rebound and what doesn’t will be converted into a shower of magical sparks opposite from the force. I don’t want any idiots mining their islands away to nothing or falling through a hole in the world. It can, however, be slowly cajoled into new shapes with fairy glamor, so the Peris can still do some terraforming to suit their needs.
The aerocore bedrock projects a field in which air pressure and temperature are kept roughly equal to that of the highest surface elevation below each given chunk of aerocore (so islands floating above a jungle will be hot with sea level air pressure, while ones above a mountain will be a bit cooler and with lower air pressure). This field also disperses some wind around it, so that the sky islands aren’t regularly swept blank and raw by high atmosphere wind speeds.
