Champions of the Moon

A Korvey folk tale.

Summary

"The Sundering, the time when the Gith ravaged and plundered our world, left our people without hope. All lived in fear of Gith magic and weaponry. A raid in the night. A dreadnaught's sudden appearance with the use of evil Gith magic! What hope did the common mortal have against these monsters? So we prayed to any power that seemed likely to save us, even those who seemed out of reach. Our eyes soared to the moon, our cries unheard through the vast distance. As others fell or abandoned us for tales of false safety, we built faith. Legends say, the champions of old planted a beanstalk upon the tallest mountain in Korvey, a rocky and barren place, where doubters swore it would never grow. Some wanted to leave, even after how far they traveled, and fought to get to that very spot in the mountains; but Thors, proudest of the champions of faith, swore that he would not leave this mountain, he would defend this beanstalk, and he would climb it to ask the Moon why it has failed to answer their prayers, for Thors was a proud champion. He prayed to the stalk and tended to its needs in between battles with the Gith. Many doubted it would even produce beans, let alone lead them to the Moon, but Thors swore to all that the bean the stalk was to grow from was magic and would grow with prayer and care. With that, Thors and his fellowship protected and cared for the stalk, hoping their prayers would be answered. Thors swore to his people that he would eat from the beanstalk and speak to the Moon. And so he did. And he ate from the beanstalk's bounty once his and his follower's food emptied, for it indeed had grown in time; so did the others eat, and soon the beanstalk became sustenance for the entire fellowship. With the stalk sprouting bounties, the champions felt all was not lost, and their prayers strengthed, strengthening the stalk's growth further. For 100 days and 100 nights, the champions held their ground against Gith assaults, praying their efforts would lead them to their salvation.
