Chaos Coffee Shop and Spa

Everyone has heard of the Chaos Coffee Shop, the headquarters of the Chaos Cartel. It's the place where you go to renew your spirit when you're needing hope, joy, or just a bit of encouragement.   You can get just about every caffeinated beverage under the sun except tea (and a few that aren't,) an unlimited supply of chocolate, brownies, and cupcakes (in gluten and lactose free varieties, too!) and from time to time, whimsical offerings such as fruit pies, cheesecake, eclairs, ice cream in a plethora of occasionally-strange flavours, popsicles or cotton candy (in gluten, lactose, and sugar-free varieties as well.)You can get fresh fruit too, or spicy potato chips, or pizza or mountain-of-mushrooms burgers or escargot or truffles, or animal crackers, or Hare-ru (brightly-coloured gummy candies in adorable rabbit shapes,) or Chaos Beans, a mixed bag of jellybeans where a few "gross" flavours, such as dirt or wax, appear mingled among the lime and buttered popcorn, and it's hard to tell which is which.   Chocolate covered coffee beans, Rabbit Kick energy drinks and Rabbit Crack, colour-changing Chiropteran Coffee Creamers, Lapin Honey cakes, and cola gummy candies with actual caffeine are a staple. Holiday options include shaped sugar cookies with colourful sprinkles, Indian sweets, badger-shaped Hare-ru to represent Santa Claws at Tomesmas, or bird-shaped Hare-ru and Kinder Surprise eggs for Avisalia, and pumpkin-spiced everything.   What you can't get is health food. Or vitamin water. Or protein bars. The Chaos Coffee Shop only serves things that spark joy.The baristas serve everything with a flourish and a smile, and with patterns in the cream that are true works of art.Every visitor agrees that it's a single coffee shop. What they don't agree on is where it is located. The only consistent point in space is given as somewhere near The Warren... although where near the Warren is up for debate. People have claimed, however, that the Coffee Shop has appeared in every known Protectorate. Arguments have broken out over it from time to time.   They are all correct. The Chaos Coffee Shop is actually a small pocket dimension that was partially formed out of recycled realities from The Void. Using Literomancy similar to the way in which the Lapin Secret Library operates, the Coffee Shop has been stamped with the essence of several different coffee shops in the physical Realm, put together in modules of time and space. Each of these component coffee shop elements have been selected from favourite haunts of the Chaos Cartel leaders.   The only obvious coffee shop front is near the Warren in Okanagan City, with whimsical stained-glass windows facing whatever street it happens to be on at the moment, and a mysterious carved wooden door with an oval mirror in its center. However, a door to the Chaos Coffee Shop just might randomly open in any doorway, passage, or archway. People have found their way to the Coffee Shop from dark alleys, cave entrances, bathroom and prison stalls, and even archways through gloomy forests or coral reefs. Perhaps the magic is such that it simply opens up wherever it is most needed.   Recently, co-Capo AttorraRu also established a spa portion of the Coffee Shop for healing and encouragement.
Just don't go into my cave! The dragon roar sound should tell you ye've gone far enough!

Purpose / Function

The Chaos Coffee Shop is a place that deals in encouragement. When someone is feeling low, especially creatives and Literomancers, the Coffee Shop exists to cheer people up and support them in the pursuit of their dreams. Some of the Literomantic features it offers for this purpose include:
  • Sticky notes imbued with encouragement charms, created by Queen TaraFaeBelle, which can be selected, one per customer, from a basket at the till - also available in the form of fortune cookies
  • Chiropteran Coffee Creamers - colour-changing, uplifting, and focus creamers can be ordered off the menu. Other creamers are available by request for those who know to ask for them
  • Anyone can award another a Flame of Encouragement by writing their name and deeds on a sticky note from a cauldron, and then burning the note in the Coffee Shop's Eternal Flame. Their names and deeds then appear on the Wall of Fire as if chiseled into the stone

  • Unless an event is going on, music is quiet, instrumental, and interesting but inoffensive (quiet jazz, lo-fi, chillwave, etc.) Each table also has an emitter that doubles as an ambient light. The emitters can be set to play pink, brown, or white noise, or a variety of ambient sounds, such as forest or underwater noises, at a volume of your choice. The lights cycle slowly through soft pastel illumination on their standard setting, but can also be set for celestial themes, flames, or underwater ambience. Emitters in private booths can also be set to emit daylight, and Bluetooth earphones are available by request.
Aye, I'm sorry — currently the emitters are configured to human audiovisual ranges only. We're workin' on adapting them, but more research is needed.

    Alterations

AttorraRu added the spa portion at the end of the 2025 April Tourney by converting three pools that led to the Gem Caves from The Dragon Cave. According to rumour, these pools also connect to The Cavern, but this is unconfirmed.   These three pools are glacial-fed, and refreshingly cold. They are infused by the gems and minerals that are natural from their sourced caves. Bathers leave the pools feeling revitalized. The cold is mitigated by a dragon- and geothermal-heated sauna. It is a common sight to see Queen Sable Aradia moving between the sauna and the pools for several hours at the end of a week.   The spa is run by a rescued clockwork lemur that AttorraRu "found" during an excursion by the Undead into the evacuated Cavern during The Fifth Word War. His name is Liam, and he is a brightly cheerful, consummate host.

    Aquarium

One room is dominated by walls that form a large aquarium filled with bright tropical fish and other sea life. Seating is in shades of teal and aqua, and the floor is tile rather than wood, clearly aiming to provide comfort for any Molluscans who might drop by. Many land-dwellers also find it soothing.

    Wall of Fire

One castle-sized room is the location of the Wall of Fire, a large stone wall etched with names and deeds. It is bordered by a line of fire that serves as heating, as well as illumination, that comes up from a charcoal pit and piping from the floor. This flame is kept burning continuously. A large iron cauldron is positioned near the Wall, filled with sticky notes, which may then be used to inscribe the name and deeds of a recipient of a Flame of Encouragement, which is then burnt in the flames to be magically added to the Wall. The rest of the room is also walled in smooth, dark stone, furnished in comfy leather couches and chairs surrounding intimate wood coffee tables, and the floor is tiled with a colourful mosaic of a burning flame with a heart at its center. The opposite wall to the Eternal Flame holds a bookshelf that is a book exchange station, and a cupboard of stationery supplies. In the Tomemas season, it also features an enormous Christmas tree.

    Currency

In a capitalist world, things cost money. So you can buy the goodies at the Chaos Coffee Shop with actual money, if you want to. Any Protectorate's currency is accepted, as are some more "unorthodox" currencies, such as Literomantic Batteries, art pieces for the shop (perhaps especially the fingerpainting or crayon art of children,) old clothing, toys, fidgets or supplies someone else might need, or even just interesting shinies a raven might find fascinating. Failing anything else, you can always offer your "useless ideas" to charge an Inspiration Engine. But primarily, the Chaos Cartel deals in encouragement. So they'll tell you, if you ask, to "pay it forward." They will give you a sparkler to hold onto as a form of IOU or promissory note. When you pay the encouragement you received forward to someone else, the sparkler will self-ignite (with a heatless flame that will not hurt or damage anything else) to signify that the debt has been honoured.
